the fate of the infinity engine

Post by humanflyz »

Is ToB the last game using the IE? I sure hope not because I think IE is the best engine for a not top of the line computer. For example, take a look at my PC:
AMD K6 333 MHz
64 MB RAM
4 MB PCI video card

The games running IE runs fine on my computer. Although I realize that my PC is pretty dated, I hope that Bioware would not abandon gamers like me who has a low tech PC. Whatever happened to me TeamBG petition for Bioware to release the source code or toolset that they used to create IE games? I sure hope that Bio guys can release it. It extends gaming time because gamers can continue to play the game and carry on its legacy even if the developers stopped supporting it.

If they can use the IE for another game, then the games running IE would be the new set of GoldBox games.

It is a shame really that they are scrapping the engine, if they had kept the engine in production instead of trying to move on to engines such as neerwinter nights then the produciton costs would be less and we would hopefully have games like Neverwinter Nights in our hands now rather than next year.

You won't be climbing walls in 3D Neverwinter Nights either... For performance reasons!

yes its a good engine, and they should at least license it out to other companies

Actually my computer is only about 3 years old. I bought it in the beginning of 1999. Looking back on it, I realized I made a stupid decision in buying a computer that early. I should've waited and got a better one. Besides, my parents think that computers are only used for "homework" and "research". Fortunately I have a job and I am saving up to buy a new one. Unfortunately to buy a new comp, I had to wait until next summer. That means I will miss alot, and I mean alot of good games.

If my calculations are right, 5-6 years ago is '95-'96. I got my first computer in Christmas of '95. It was top of the line with 75mhz Pentium Processor, 32MB RAM, and 1GB Hard Drive. I got my current PC about 2-3 years ago. It was slightly better than humanflyz PC with 375Mhz Pentium II Processor, 96MB RAM, 3D Accelerator card. Since I started PC gaming, I have also started upgrading, which is difficult with limited funds.

Do you guys really think any money can be made from the Infinity Engine ? I don't think so. While the quality programmers at BioWare can certainly keep churning out games with great content and original storylines, they would not make money. Don't get me wrong, with the legions of dedicated fans, they would certainly sell, and sell alot. But I don't think they would sell enough to turn a profit. And when that happens, the team will be dissolved, and then there wouldnt be any more IE games, period.

But is there any reason on God's green earth that BioWare can't pump out even better, and even more involved games using the NeverWinter Nights engine ? I trust their creative abilities and their plain common sense enough to think so. 2d game engines are in their twilight days, and 3-dimensional gaming is already everywhere. It has locked down fps and is making headway into rts, and I think NeverWinter Nights will be an even bigger milestone in quality gaming than the Baldur's Gates series was.

Bright days are ahead, folks.
