In what Order should I do the areas?

Post by Morollan »

Hiya All,

Got myself ToB a few days ago and started BG & BG:TotSC almost immediately (and all just because I was so unsatisfied with PoR). Now I'm almost through with BG:TotSC and will start SoA/ToB soon.

I've played SoA before (just till Exiting the Underdark though), so I'd like to know what the best order of doing things would be (in terms of challenge and balance).

On my first run I did all in the city till I had the option to go to spellhold with some areas in the wilderness done, then I mopped up the rest there was to do. Then I went to Spellhold etc.

Now I'd like to know in what order it be best to do things (just tell me about the SoA part and watcher's Keep, I hope to keep the rest a surprise).

Zhanks folks,

it really depends upon what class you are,
like if you are a bard you want to do the bard quest as soon as you can, given you will have the extra xp from TOTSC maybe even immediately, so what class are you? You probably want to do the stronghold quest for your character first or second because you will get stuff specifically designed for your average character, like bards will get instruments, and the paladin gets his sword on his special quest. but you might want to do another quest first, i suggest before you do any of the quests you do the slaver stockade quest at the copper coronet for access to the bartender's special stock of magic weapons, plus it's good money and easy experience. The thieves quest is in my opinion the easiest quest of all, but the fighter's quest is the best prep for any of the other quests because of the items and xp, just make sure you buy the sword of flame from the copper coronet bartender.
more advice if you tell me what class you are

Thanks for the fast reply!

I'm playing a fighter in BG1, will have him with 161k at level 8. Am planning on taking him to level 9 then dualing to Mage. Not sure if I'll give him a kit though (Not Kensai, I've heard they're great, but I do not like them for RP reasons).

As my party goes, I'll be having Jaheira , Minsc , Nalia and Imoen. Not sure about the rest, probably Keldorn and Anomen.

Well ... SoA has a nice feature, the difficulty of the quests increases with the XP of your main character. Eg today I did the vampire guild with a party of 4 at lvl 9-11 and it was not as impossible as I imagined it to be from earlier games - because there were less vampires. This mechanism also works in other areas like the Shade Lord area.

From that point of view, the order is not totally determined by the difficulty of quests because difficulty sometimes is relative to your level.

What I'd do first is to visit Watcher's Keep, buy the potion case and get inside for the ammo case due to logistical reasons. I wouldn't go a single step further during chapter 2 or 3 because your party gets awfully strong in WK, especially if the party is small. I once went down further with the result of having three lvl 20+ characters before even reaching Underdark - which simply took the fun out of the game. For experimental reasons I attacked Adolon and the fight was done within 30 seconds without preparation, don't ask about the normal quests, pure boredom.

What I'd do is simply to stroll around in the city and pick up a truckload of quests. From that point on I'd look at my journal and do the quest I'm in the mood for. The early ones may include the slavers, the nymphs, lesser graveyard quests and your stronghold quest. But once your journal is full of possibilities of what to do next, it feels quite good IMHO.
