Computer Woes...

Post by Nippy »

Hi all.

I've got a little problem with my computer. I've had BG2 installed for a little while now and have put on TDD and ToB after removing TDD. The problem is, I need to unistall BG2 because I need to install another program (lack of HD space). For some reason, it won't let me unistall BG2. I uninstalled ToB firstly, then it does the usual of removing BG2, however, it just doesn't uninstall! It goes through to 100% in about 2 seconds and doesn't uninstall the game. Please help, I've got coursework to do and I need my new program to do it... :)

My advice is to just delete the folder that BG2 lays in (depending on how fast you need the diskspace).
There will be a lot of ophan files due to this and ophan references in the system - but at least it will clear the harddrive :)
Afterwards you can run some utilities to remove the ophan references (reg-clean for cleaning your reg.database amongs others) etc.

Otherwise I have no real advice seeing as I've never had problems with unistalling BG2

OK I should have no problems with that. I can backup my characters and so on. How can I remove all of the junk in the registry?

From www.Bioware.com BG2 Known Issues

How to uninstall BG2

Here is the procedure to uninstall BG2:

Uninstall using the shortcut in the BG2 Start menu or the Add/Remove Programs utility in the Control Panel. The game files should be removed from the user's hard drive and the shortcuts removed from the Start menu.

If step 1 failed, run "baldur.exe" from the CD. It should notify the user that the previous installation attempt failed and that they should try reinstalling the game using the program's Install button.

If step 2 failed, edit the "baldur.ini" file in the directory where the game was installed. Look for the "Installing" key under the "Program Options" section, set it to 1 ("Installing=1"), save the file and repeat step 2.

If step 3 failed, edit the system registry using the regedit / regedit32 utility. Remove the following keys:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ App Paths \ BG2Main.exe
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Uninstall \ {8DAE4336-2B71-11D4-9A6C-006067325E47}

Go to your Program Files directory and find the hidden directory "InstallShield Installation Information" and delete the directory labeled "{8DAE4336-2B71-11D4-9A6C-006067325E47}"

Manually delete all the files and directories created by the previous installation attempts (this should return the system to its state before the original installation attempt) and try again to install from the CD.

Good luck! :)

I should've guessed that. I've posted links to their support site so many times. I just never hunted for an answer to someone's problem and posted it in such detail. well done. :)

A tech guru is someone who knows one fact more than the idiot next to them. You knew how to fix Nippy's problem, we're the idiots.

A tech guru is a person who is fixing a problem someone has at the moment that has already kicked his ass in the past. :D
