How important is Jaheira in BG2?

Post by DeadlyVomit »

Im not necessarily asking for a spoiler on this just a confirmation wheather this is true or not. Im playing with a group that just left the dungeon part,where you start, without releasing Jaheira. And I just heard that she's a very important part of the story. Is this true? Just want to know because our party would have to start from an earlier saved game, which is fine if it's necessary.

If you're asking if she's required to finish the game, no. None of the NPCs are really important to the main story. But she's an interesting character and will provide you with some quests and if you're lucky enough, a romance too.

You could keep Jaheira for any of several reasons:
  • She's a good fighting unit;
  • She has some of the best spells;
  • She seems to have a lot of plot;
  • You might be able to seduce her.

I dispute that.

just a note,

To finish the game no NPC is indispensable of course, still I have the feeling (personal opinion of course) that Jaheira has the most things to add to the way the main character goes.
But then again, maybe I'm too much prejudiced by reading the BGII novel. Image
anyway, I'm enjoying reading the q&a you're all putting on this newsgroup, as they are funny and they are lightening-up a lot of things while I'm playing BGII

at first i thought that i did'nt need jaheira, BUT she really is a strong component.
With her spells like iron skin (i Really love that spell), insect plague and summon fire elemental (don't underrestemate the elemental he's very good) she is one heck of a fighter/druid
and she lookes nice of course Image Image Image

I liked the Fire elementals and Insect Plague. She can be outfitted as a decent tank too. Not a great tank I guess but I used her as one and managed to finish the game.

I think it is 50/50 keep her or lose her.

How important is Yoshimo to the game...we will need a thief in the party untill I level up...just wondering if Yoshimo is a pretty good thief, or will we find another one rather quickly.

SPOILER

I know we will lose Imoen as soon as we leave the dungeon.

@Sly ...Yoshimo is a nice piece of the story to keep if you have the room.

Jaheira can also be used to challenge the High Druid to finish the Trademeet animal attack problem if you don't want to recruit Cernd. But she must be in certain level (i forgot, but if you can see this info quite often when BG try to load on certain occasions)

As for the thief, i say dump Yoshi. Can you imagine how hard to get him to high level and then get betrayed ? I used Jan Jansen and he's very entertaining especially combined with Minsc Image

I'm a big Jaheira backer. Equip her with Belm or Blackblood (and then Staff of the woodlands +4 near the end). Add on a good sheild (I like the one you get after finishing the two Trademeet quests) and one of the strength items...and she ends up being one of the great PCs in the game. Plus, the druid spells can be very useful (esp. summon fire elemental, summon woodland being, ironskins, and insect plague). She won't have as much HPs as a single-class character, and she can never cast level-7 spells, but she's really great all the same.

Plus, the harper quests are fun, and her romance is the most complex. Unless you're soloing, I consider her essential.
