well, at the moment Argyle is allowing characters to use 28 points under the point-buy system.

There is an explanation of this on the BotB website. Basically each stat starts at 8. From there, you have 28 points to spend on your character.

for stats 9-14, use 1 point.

for stats 15-16, use 2 points

for stats 17-18, use 3 points

The BotB website explains it better with examples.

Dont forget the racial modifiers:

Elf: +2 dext, -2 con
Dwarf: +2 con, -2 char
Half-orc: +2 str, -2 int, -2 char
Halfling: +2 dext, -2 str
Gnome: +2 con, -2 str

Remember that when you distribute your points, consider the future. Is your Elven Bard going to rely more on his combat than his spells? Up your Con, Dex or Str, if more on spells, then whack up Cha. :)

I'd suggest absolute minimums of...
14 Dex (gives a few cheap points of almighty Armor Class)
10 Con (you don't want Hit Point penalties)
11 Cha (so you'll be able to cast level 6 spells when you finally get them)

More would be a good thing, but this is the absolute lowest you can go without really shooting yourself in the foot.
