Most fun party to play with?
Most fun party to play with?
Hey. I have completed both SOA and TOB now and i have tried various party combinations as well as playing the game solo.
So far i have been playing with parties and characters designed to be efficient, i have been powergaming.
Now, effiency aside, what do you people out there think is the most fun party to play with? I don't necessarily mean NPCs, just what kind of character class combinations you think make for an enjoyable party?

i like cleric/mages.
they have the all important healing spells and, the ability turn undead and offensive mage spells.
the cleric half allows you to use a better range weapons and are'nt limited like the mages to slings, staffs and daggers.

argumentative parties
well, I've only been through the game 1 full time, TOB included, and about 1/2 way through SOA 2x. Someone posted about having the argumentative party, eg: Cernd, Jan, Nalia, maybe Korgan for a tank, weird challenging PC class,

Here's an interesting idea(at least, I think it's interesting).
Have a party where everyone in the party is likely to get into an actual fight with another party member. Let them duke it out and gradually replace those who get killed, keeping the survivers and see who you end up with by the end. I would think that, depending on when the fights happen and how you equip them, the results would tend to very, ne?

To add to Sailor Saturn's idea, you could reload to right before they duke it out and strip them down....... Bare nuckle boxing, anyone?

Korgan: Be aware, Mazzy, I've something long, hard and low to the ground ye're free to touch and fondle. Child, no need to glare! 'Twas me axe I were referring to.

Two parts to this: the protagonist and the party members.
There were three main things that I looked at when choosing the protagonist character:-
- How interesting is the character to level up?
- How much is the character in the action?
- Does the character make sense as the leader of the group?
(To a certain extent I look at these three elements when playing any RPG.)
It's not an easy choice. Dual/multi-classes seem to be more appealing because they can have double the abilities and tend to level up more times. I prefer multi-classes to dual because they do not have to go through the switch, plus they get to choose from two lists of high-level abilities. My list of favorite protagonist characters, based on fun not on power, is as follows:
- Fighter/Thief
- Ranger/Cleric (gets some cool druid spells)
- Fighter/Mage
- Stalker
- Thief/Mage
- Cleric/Mage
- Paladin (any of the three kits)
Choosing your other party members is tougher. I always play with one PC and five NPCs. I think the NPCs are too much fun to pass up. I have not had every NPC, but the most fun ones I've experienced are:
- Jan
- Edwin
- Korgan
- Viconia (probably the most interesting romance)
- Anomen (yeah, he's annoying, but in a good way)
Minsc and Jaheira are pretty interesting characters and have a lot of lines of dialogue, but I find them both very annoying. I also do not like the following NPCs:
- Nalia ("How are we helping the poor and unfortunate ..." really pisses me off, and she's either silent or whiney the rest of the time.)
- Aerie (another whiner)
- Keldorn (he's only interesting when you have evil party members, but he normally ends up killing them)
- Valygar (yawn)
So, I suppose my ideal party would be:
- Korgan (F)
- Viconia (C)
- Edwin (M)
- Jan (T/M)
+ One other
That group has a thief and two mages, but it is missing a fighter and another priest (druid). It is also missing someone with a powerful ranged attack. The obvious thing would be for the protagonist to be a ranger/cleric and to get Mazzy (with her bow) to fill the empty NPC slot. The alternative would be for the protagonist to be a fighter/thief and to keep Jaheira. Jaheira is a bit annoying but her catfights with Viconia are very entertaining.

this is about my 6th run through SoA(don't have ToB i'd prolly kill for one by now )
i decided to pick up NPC's that i haven't used previously like
Haer'dalis
Anomen
Yoshimo(SPOILER!!----------------------------->i don't like traitors so i'm gonna stone him and then maybe cheat little and jump back to athkatla and revive him and have him with me in underdark too!)
plus i have jaheira trying the impossible: romance without patches..
and keldorn, i was going to get valygar and cernd but then i thought that i've played stalker, decent solo, don't like in a party(already have a backstabber) and cernd well he sucks because he well sucks and i thought it might be interesting to try the only romance i haven't completed
i have a monk, yes powergame char but trust me, at the beginning you won't believe how hard it was before i got haer'dalis my "mage" he's the only spellcaster in the party, luckily i got keldy to dispell mages prot spells...

I like parties with "weaker" characters and which includes a bit of everything (mage spells, priest spells, melee, ranged attacks, backstabs, traps...). I like to have one character dual wielding, a second using a shield, a third using a two handed weapon etc, and to have the profiencies spread around so that no one uses the same weapon as another. Some fav NPCs are:
Anomen - Thought him somewhat weak at first and therefor tried him out, only to find he wasn't at all. Extremely nice NPC. Weaknesses: Low Dex, not so high Wis.
Jan - Mr. Versatility! Good interaction, lots of thief skills and great personal gear. Weaknesses: High AC, few HPs.
Valygar - Nice kit, great while dual wielding two katanas, excellent backstabber and scout. Weaknesses: High AC due to armor restriction.
Cernd - Nice kit, too. Loads of spells and can take care of himself while transformed. Weaknesses: (Greater) werewolf not very strong, high AC.
Nalia - Cute! Low AC, available from start, no restricted school, may use thief weapons. Weaknesses: Not a good theif, ring that can't be removed, no extra spells.
Put all of these together, create a True Bard (or use a kit) and you're ready to go. Won't be easy but lots of fun and you really have it all - up to you what to make of it!
