You didnt like the Ending? why? I loved the ending of that one for 2 reasons:
1 is that Jiko survived. 2 is that Mononoke and A****aka did go somewhat seperate ways. There were many other reasons why it was a good movie, but that was important points in then ending imo.

Another fun anime is Wolf brigade. It is also a movie without so much Black and White themes.

And I cant resist mention my all time anime favourite among the series: Serial experiment Lain. Lains bear suit alone makes this one enyojable, but it have far more good points than that. ;)

Hmmm, interesting thread.

But I'm suprised nobody mentioned Bubblegum Crisis.

I've been trying to get access to the whole series, to me it has the same qualities found in Ghost In The Shell and unlike other many other series (DBZ) it thankfully doesn't go overboard on the violence.
I've seen that for sale, but have been hesitant to get it.

I recently bought Very Private Lessons and Revolutionary Girl Utena: Adolescence(sp?) of Utena. Both are good. I'm looking to get more of the Revolutionary Girl Utena anime. I've got the first manga issue and one of the more recent issues that was in the issue of Animerica Extra I bought. :)

My favourite is and always will be Ninja Scroll. It is by far the best of the animes I've seen (which, sadly, is not that many). My main turn off with anime is the television series which are aired in North America. they are crap. The dubbing is horribly, and the stuff that makes them good are edited out of it! the movies are still decent though, as nothing is edited, though the dubbing still sucks in most cases. Some of my favs include :

Patlabour 1 and 2
Ninja Scroll, as mentioned before
Akira
Endless Waltz
and Big War

I wish I could expand my horizons more, but Canada is severly limited in choice, and I'm sick of Dragonball in all it's incarnations, never liked Sailor Moon, and gundam is too short.

Have to agree with you on that. And the dubbers think we actually prefer the dubs. That's scary.

One of my favorite things to do while watching anime (and playing a drinking game) is to laugh my ass off at the riduclessly long screams and yells.

One of the cool things about Revolutionary Girl Utena movie is that you can watch the movie with the director, Kunihiko Ikuhara, explaining about how such-and-such was done and why such-and-such was done instead of the dialogue. It's kinda weird to not have any dialogue, but it's still really cool to watch. Especially when you pretty much have the dialogue memorized like I do. :D

I think I am one of the few people on this board who likes Dragonball. And besides there are only 4 incarnations of DB : Dragonball, Dragonball Z, Dragon Ball GT, and The lost movies. Personally I never have a problem with dubbing as I never watch dubbed anime, its all always in cantonese for me! Therefore if u have a problem learn japanese or chinese
It's pretty easy, I mean just go kill a dragon, get laid.

"I never thought it would end like this,
just because I got no ****,
I'll shave my legs and wear a bra,
I'll even cut my p**** off for you."
-Reel Big Fish

Now that's a love poem if I ever heard one.

Yeah right on! DBZ is great and if you don't like dubbing go learn Chinese.

Um...unless I'm mistaken, even watching it in chinese is still, technically, watching it dubbed. If the original is in Japanese, then watching it in another language requires either watching it dubbed or subbed, ne?

To dob or not to dub

Anime are Japanese cartoon so it actual language is Japanese, hence chinese language is considered dubbed version too. IMO it's a horror to watch dubbed version since you can't enjoy the stress given into the character by the seiyuu.

I watched Gundam Wing and Inuyasha in dubbed version and it really a real bugger. Last time My local aired Samurai X aka Rurouni Kenshin - also dubbed in local language and it makes me sick to watch the series since I've watched the series in original language. You can't actually feel the fun especially when Kaoru smacked Kenshin :D

For you basket ball lovers you might want to try SLAM DUNK, it's an old anime but really funny. Especially sometimes the chars were portayed in super deformed form. The main char. Hanamichi Sakuragi dunked on someones head twice, not once ! :D :D

It's a popular anime when it first aired in Japan, and also was made into console games - avaliable in Sega Mega Drive and Super Nintendo. (anyone interested to play the game can PM me ;) )

Ahh, the old sub Vs dub debate.

I actually enjoyed both versions, when done properly of course.
For example Count Of Cagliastro (sp?), I think that's the movie....
If it wasn't dubbed then during for example, the car chase scene. I would of missed out on many of the visual jokes. Hence the need for it to be dubbed.

However I stil enjoy the sub-titled ones.

On a slightly different note, recently saw the dubbed version of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Not much of a difference to tell you the truth.

Another update : there's an anime titled "Power Stone" it's supposely made by Capcom IIRC. My opinion about this anime is simple : "Two thumbs down !" I'm an anti Capcom (Yes I despise their Street Fighter games - I prefer to play other fighting games than Capcom) but that does not biassed my judgement for anime - that anime really sucks.

Yeah. And you miss out on some of the linguistic effects, too.

An example:

In the Japanese, Heero Yuy quietly says to Relena, "Omae o korosu." That translates to "I'm going to kill you," which is what he said in the dub(or "I'm going to destroy you" in the edited dub). IIRC, in Japanese, using "Omae" assumes familiarity and is thus rude to use when speaking with a stranger, as Heero did with Relena. IIRC, the actual effect of Heero using "Omae" in that would be somewhat akin to what you sometimes see in American movies where a lady is captured and her captor acts as if they've got an intimate relationship, or something along those lines.

I don't know of any other examples that I can give, but a lot of it has to do with the Japanese language being more articulate than the English language.

Also, I saw Princess Mononoke last week. The sub was wonderful. The dub was good, for a dub. I still can't make sense out of Billy Bob Thorton doing the voice of a short, fat, Japanese monk, though. San is now one of my favorite bishoujo. :D

I watched Grave of the fireflies(Hotaru no haka) recently, and its definatly one of the best anime i have ever seen. Its about a young boy and his little sister's struggle to survive in Japan during the end of WW2. The movie is extremly depressing though, so dont watch it when you are feeling suicidal. :)

I've said it before in another thread and I'll say it again: Samurai X is great. However, I always saw it with English dubbing, so I can't imagine what it would be like to watch the original Japanese version (you easily get used to the voices, when you watch a series). I definitely like the way Kenshee's inner struggle with his past is portraid in the series - of course, most people like the battle scenes best, which are indeed really cool (the words Hiten Mitsurigi style, among other things, are burnt into my memory :D , ever since I saw those battles).

I saw "Grave of the Fireflies" a few years ago and thought much the same as Dottie. A good cure to the enevitable downer is to watch "My Neibour Totoro" straight after. Just got to love the Cat Bus.
