I think Yoshimo is perfectly cast as a bounty hunter.....Originally posted by geh4th:
Hmmm. So who among the NPC's DO fit their class?
should I keep Minsc?
Forget Minsc. Korgan's "Me axe be bloody ready!" is classic! Give him as many 2-weapon proficiencies as possible, along with the two good +3 axes, and Korgan rocks. Not to mention that Minsc doesnt get along with Edwin, whom I think is a great character. Yeah yeah, I'm evil, and it's great. Hey, you guys ever notice that both Minsc and Edwin have similar slavic sounding accents? Is there some connection there, same homeland or something? I didn't play BG1 but know they're both involved in the Dynaheir story.
I see the right, and I approve it too; condemn the wrong and yet the wrong pursue.
GIve Korgan "Rifthome Axe +3", then he does around 22 damage every throw, pretty fast and makes many Criticals...

A simple way to find out how good a fighter your npc's are is put them to fighting each other and see who kicks who's butt. In my game Korgan always kills Minsc very fast. The only charater that I have that can kill Korgan in a straight out blade to blade fight is my own.

I picked Minsc because he's a great guy to interact with for your other NPC members, besides the fact I can beat the game with any compliment. Where's Maurice and my favorite ChrisBoney?

In the Forgotten Realms, Rashemon and Thay are at war. They are neighboring countries, with the Red Wizards of Thay seeking to gain dominion through magic. Rashmon counters their magicl prowess with berserking fighters and powerful witches.
In my opinion, Minsc should've been a Barbarian.
In fact, I just rolled him up as one (Boo and all) for my local gaming group's 1st Edition campaign.

i wonder why no one ever mentions valygar as a good fighter...i equip him with celestial fury and the other katana that gives -1 to ac(forgot name) and he is a killing machine..much better then minsc in my opinion..plus his overall stats are much better then minsc's...minsc has a very low wisdom and intelligence which gives him negatives against some mental domination spells and esp. mind flayers

i really enjoy playing with minsc. he's also the only one of my players with proficiency in mace, which makes him critical in fights with golems and undead (i don't have any hammer-users, yet.) plus, his dialogue is a lot of fun.
i had valygar for quite a long time, and although he was great with a long bow, i decided yesterday to pick up mazzy instead and see how that would work out. i am surprised and delighted at what a little powerhouse mazzy can be. with delver's plate +2 and tansheron's bow as well as a variety of shortswords, she can pick 'em off from a distance and is quick with the shortsword once they get to her. what really stunned me is that when i picked her up she was level 12, had four stars in short sword and five stars in short bow. in the very first extended battle she levelled up and i think that i will keep her. she's also a pleasant character to play with and she and jan have already had some fun conversations, which resulted in this priceless quote from jan that kept me laughing for a while: (paraphrased)
jan: that reminds me of the time i was dancing naked on the poop deck and ...
mazzy: shutup shutup SHUTUP!

Yes I think you will find Mazzy an excellent fighter. Too bad you didn't get her earlier -if you get her at eighth level you can put her proficiencies either in another weapon (there are no shortswords better than +2, I think) or single weapon style.
Currently I have a party with both Mazzy and Minsc. Every combat starts with my PC (7thRanger/12thCleric) soaking up the attacks while Minsc and Mazzy get a few arrows off. Switch to swords for melee...
Mazzy's a better archer, Minsc kicks butt in melee. Mazzy's courage ability incredibly useful for dragons and such.
The halfling is pretty cute too. If I thought there was a romance possible, I'd take a halfing male fighter or cleric PC in a second

Aren't all hobbits (I try to avoid using the TSR-ized name for the race) cute in that "little brother or sister" kind of way?
I think there is a +4 shortsword (named cutthroat) that you can find. I do not know if it is restricted on who can use it, though....

There is also the Short Sword of Backstabbing (remember this one from BG 1?). You'll get it from Renald after having killed Mae'var.
If you're not satisfied with Mazzy's profiencies they are easy to change.

yup. the short sword of backstabbing is exactly what i have her using. although if there is a +4 short sword out there i definitely want to find it! i may eventually edit her proficiencies to give her a different weapon option
and i think her paper doll is the cutest thing ever. dress her up in some slinky chain mail and you have one hot little tamale.

But of course they can. Not very realistic, though, the sword being longer than them selves. Still, very funny...

@Mhr'djynn - just wait to you get to the Underdark.
@geh4th - Where's the smiley for a tip o' the hat? "Hobbits" it is. Still, I'm not sure TSR's halfings are hobbits. Where's their magic resistance? Maybe they're just not Bagginses.
Meanwhile, I forgot the +3 backstabber was a sword, not a dagger. I used it excessively with a PC "Stalker" (ugh! who chose THAT name?). Valygar fans: try a PC version. Rangers lend themselves very nicely to the "reroll" button, and they seem to have a higher backstabbing multiplier than the kit description promises.

Hmm...what does the Mazzy's paperdoll look like with a 2-handed sword equipped? I bet that is an amusing sight. I look forward to trying it out just to see it.

Were we to think in terms of Tolkein races, I would thing the magic resistance SHOUD appear (for both dwarves and hobbits) as a hefty saving throw bonus rather than a MR percentage...but then, that is the other (superior, IMHO) RPG system coloring my opinion.
Frankly, I guess I'd be considered a heretic, because I do not like hobbits in EITHER Tolkein OR RPG's. Their style is not my "load of pipeweed". Give me a Dunadan or Noldo any day, or even a Naugrim.
Somebody said Minsc should have been a barbarian, something I never considered. I think that is a VERY compelling argument; his behavior reflects it, and unlike beserker, the barbarian would reflect his tendencies towards nature (the ranger attitude) and his relative innocence towards defenseless creatures (Boo and every kid you stumble across in BG2).
