Black screen, orange monitor light

Post by Quitch »

Cack, I had this under Windows 2000 and now under XP. I'm running XP Pro on an AMD 1Ghz Thunderbiord, 512MB SDRAM and a Elsa GeForce 2 MX. I run DirectX 8.1 (obviously).

I go into the config tool and run a test, the monitor clicks once (my monitor clicks whenever it changes resolution or refresh rate), the screen goes black and the monitor light goes orange, it then goes green and the test is over. This happens no matter what the resolution or 3D settings. It would normally click once, go black, click again and display the squares, then click once more flicking back to the config tool.

I was running the 23.11 drivers (having just updated from 21.83), however I think the problem was caused by tweaking in GTU (GeForce tweak Utility). However, I have disabled all the features in it, and I still have the same problem. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, and I have even tried going to the Beta Detonator drivers that are floating around, 27.23.

Of course it's my fault for being a prat. I didn't understand that the GTU save feature was saving defaults for when new drivers are loaded, rather than saving settings, so reinstalling the drivers isn't wiping these settings. As I said though, even when I turn them all off, still no luck. Reinstalling BG2 won't help, I did that under 2K. I can't roll back to pre-GTU either, I saved at least twice.

Probably a system wipe by this point, but I'm hoping someone out there has a better understanding of GTU, or of the problem, than I do.

It should be noted that I also use the GeForce Refresh Rate Fix program, which is correctly configured for 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768. My desktop is 1024x768. I don't have problems in any other 3D game (that I have tested since thus far). The test was failed even when trying on the drivers for the GF2 that ship with XP (tested after uninstalling the detonator drivers and rebooting).

It certinally has a question that is the same as mine, I'll give it a whirl. Thanks for the link.
