When does TDD start
I am hesitant to install TDD, because of the hoardes of extra stuff which I have added. Also, my earlier brief foray into TDD suggested that the new areas are not immediately accessibly once you reach Athkatla. So how much of SoA do I have to trawl through first to get to TDD?

You have to start a completely new game for the TDD expansion to go into effect. There are some changes almost immediately in Irenicus's dungeon.
After you install TDD, your old SoA saved games will disappear from the Load Games menu.
TDD isn't just new areas (like Heart of Winter and Trials of the Luremaster were for IWD); it includes new NPCs to join your party (plus some old ones from BG1) and some new quests. The integration with BG2 is fairly good, although there are a few bugs, but overall it is very nice for an "unofficial" expansion.
You also need to make sure that you have uninstalled ToB (if you have it) before installing TDD. I think TeamBG is working on a patch that will be compatible with ToB, but it's not out yet.

I haven't gotten to any of the major add-on dungeons, but if you pick up some of the NPCs, they each have their own sub-plots, much like the NPCs in the stock BG2. For instance, I pick up Robillard in the docks and he has assassins chasing him for his work aboard the Sea Sprite. I think there is a major area added after you kill Irenicus at the end, but I'm not sure.
PM Ned Flanders and ask him; he's further through the MOD than I am.

I noticed that they increased the numbers of some enemies and added some new ones (the bugbears at the beginning threw me for a loop; the first time I saw them I thought they were just hobgoblins, but after a fireball or two didn't take them down, I decided to read the combat dialogue and boy was I surprised!).
Did they also make the computer AI smarter or will using Cloudkill repeatedly still kill the dragons?

It hits right away. Should you choose to install TDD, go to the Copper Coronet ASAP, and you'll find several NPCs with new quests awaiting you.Originally posted by Bobsy
Yeah, all this I know already. But having got out of the dungeon into Athkatla, how much of SoA do I have to play through in order to get to the TDD bits?

Is there a master list of TDD NPCs and their quests?
I have encountered:
Robillard (docks; being chased by assassins)
Shar-Teel (government district jail)
Xzar (outside Harper HQ; wanted to go get Montaron, I left him)
Adario Kalvaras (Copper Coronet)
Also is there a way to trigger NPC quests? Are they on timers?

Lo, there do I see my father
Lo, there do I see my mother and my sisters and my brothers
Lo, there do I see the line of my people back to the beginning
Lo, they do call to me
They bid me take place among them in the Halls of Valhalla

Guys, if you're going to give out spoiler info about TDD, even though it's not about Bioware code, you may want to put a lengthy SPOILER header on your messages. Just so people don't find out quickly while reading your posts what they'd reather discover inside the mod.

In the stock SoA, Xzar is killed by the Harper assassin. In TDD, after the Harper kills Xzar, he teleports in and explains that the "Xzar" you saw die was a clone. He then asks to join the party to go find Montaron in the Harper HQ.
Plus the TDD website doesn't have any walkthrough info about their quests.
