Detect illussions

How does the thief skill detect illussions work? Is it useful at all.

It does not seem to be of any use. I have played the game with 100 for Detect Illusions and I haven't seen any difference between 100 and 0 for Detect Illusions.

Yes, that's my experience, too. Strange though, wouldn't you say?

doesn't it have some effect on the thief's ability to detect hidden doors, etc.?

I don't think so. A thief will automatically detect any hidden door if his Detect Trap ability is on.

I have found it to be useful only ONCE throughout the entire game, in the Trademeet quest with the Djinni's. The target you're looking for is under an illusion, and my thief pierced through it, detecting the Rakshasa under the illusion.

But beyond that, I didn't find ANY use for this ability. Quite disappointing really.

Hmm...I thought that as it increased I might be able to see invisible creatures or dispell Misleads. Sounds like I'm wasting my skill points.

I don't think they give you illusion dispelling bonuses for high intelligence in BG2 either... In pnp AD&D, a person with 19 Int. is immune to 1st level illusions, a 20 Int is immune to 2nd level illusions, etc. My character is an Elven Mage/Thief, whom I imported from BG1/TotSC, and used an int. tome on... So he has a 19 Int, and should be able to see right through things like phantasmal force... I haven't found any simple illusions that I was able tp see through yet...

Not sure on this but it definitely calls for some testing.

I do remember a weird thing happened to me when I came out of the drow city I was attacked by a group of people and monsters. One of them looked like a thief type character. Anyways my main char is a fighter/thief and as I ran by this group in stealth mode I kept seeing the words "detecting illusions" pop up over the npc's head. I stayed hidden but I also had the ring of non detection on...
