First, make sure the rest of your party is far away from the room.
Do you have a cleric? If you do, you could use the sanctuary spell to switch the eggs without any problems, as long as the rest of the party isn't near enough to get noticed by the guards.
Other way is to kill both the guards and the golems, while again making sure there's not a party member standing in between the egg guards and any other Drow.

the guards die with one hit, and you don't have to kill the golems, just walk in, the golems attack when you've changed the eggs, just run out of the room, either they're too big, or they can't otherwise follow you, (close the door), while the rest of your party hangs around the exit, a fighter suits best for the job IMO
I finally solved the mess. I cast sanctuary on Anomen and switched the eggs. With the boots of speed I hustled out of the temple. I cast haste on the entire party and hustled to Phaere's. I had to kill 3 Drow along the way. Once in the Phaer'e apartment, I hit pause before she could turn hostile. I then initiated dialog. The scenerio continued. However, back in the temple they were hostile again. I had to pause and intiate dialoge before anyone attacked. I was transported to the ritual. Here is were I messe up. I forgot to turn the AI off, so my party attacked the Mother Matron before she could summon the demon. I was able to kill her and Phaere (actually quite easily) and get the stuff. I cast mass invisibility and high tailed it to the Silver Dragon. Quest complete.

ROFL, That's indeed a nice alternative way of solving your problem... But I think you've missed some Experience along the way because of this, I think you can earn more XP if you finish the ritual as you should have done.Originally posted by soefje

its not that the eggs aer switched that sets off the city, your illusion wears off. sancuary wont set off any guards, and u can get about halfway to the exit, then the illusion falls and u better haul. i still ended up fighting about 7 drows.

I never had that problem...is it because you aren't killing the guards? I just dispatch the guards very easily (they're only, like, 60 xp each) and mosy in with the staff of smiting to sort the golems out. No one turned on me evn though I killed the guards in about the most blatant way humanly possible short of biting their eyeballs out and then sucking their brains out with a hoover. I was even in sight range of other drow but noone bothered me.... maybe drow are just way more laid back than evryone makes out

How to swap the Eggs Correctly
The way to swap the eggs is as follows: Enter the Temple and leave your party at the entrance except for 2 characters - preferably a fighter and a cleric (i.e. Minsc and Anomen). Give the key and the fake eggs to your cleric. Send the fighter and the cleric to where the egg guards are and have them stand above them on the stairs, out of sight of the other Drow guards located below them on the map. Have your cleric cast Sanctuary and open the door. The egg guards will go hostile. Have your fighter and cleric kill them immediately! After both egg guards are dead, send your Sanctuaried (and hasted) cleric into exchange the eggs, leaving your fighter on the steps. The golems will not follow you beyond the door to the chamber. Done. The key to not having all the Drow go hostile on you is to kill both the egg guards quickly from the top of the stairs. If either of the guards is left alive for too long, you will see a message along the lines of "...blah blah blah...Lloth and the Drow will avenge..blah blah blah..." The egg guards should only speak to you once. If they speak to you twice, then you didn't kill them quick enough and all the Drow will go hostile on you. This method works every time and will reward you with full experience.

The problem with everyone going hostile is usually because there is a guard on the little platform that can see the entrance to the temple. When you open the door to the egg chamber, evidently a check is made on all of the guards whether they can see any of your party.
The easiest way I have found is to make the entire party invisible (potions or rings work well as does the 10' invisibility spell or mass invisibility if you have it). Then send your fastest character with the key and the fake eggs (they will need a way of turning invisible once they have switched the eggs -- I usually send a mage with the Staff of Magi, but an extra potion of invisibility works just as well). This is fool proof and doesn't require any fighting at all.

Drows Going Hostile Invisibility
It's not necessary to make everyone in the party invisible. If it's done the way I suggested, with a figther and cleric standing at the top of the stairs, they will be out of the sight of the guards at the lower platform. You can kill both the egg guards, go in and exchange the eggs, and leave without any of the Drow going hostile. However, you are correct, if you kill the egg guards in sight of the other guards, they will go hostile on you. Keys are standing at the top of the stairs, out of their sight and killing both guards before they have a chance to speak a 2nd time.
