Contingency - too slow?

Post by cpm1972 »

Does Contingency really work? Are there any tricks to it? I have it cast on my protaganist at 10%, 25% or 50% hitpoints for a Otilukes' Resilient Sphere as a get away in bad times and ALWAYS he still dies. I thought it was because death skipped from 100% to 0% hitpoints, but instead let a KuoToa hack away and watched my hitpoints with the TAB key go down by 8-10 at a time and still no contingency...

Any thoughts?

Contingency is slow, but you should really have an effective spell in the contingency itself. Spells like improve invisibility or stoneskin is the ones you should have. Mirror image is also pretty good. You might also want to set it when you are helpless instead. Hope that helps...

no what you do is do contingency with raise dead for 10% hit points, then you die, and come back to life! (doesn't work with your main character) It works great with aerie.

Would the romance end after she get resurrected?

I think romances only get wrecked if the character is petrified or booted from the party and then asked to rejoin. Maybe imprisonment and then freedom spoils it too.

Contingencies are "slow" as the effect isn't "instant". The Contigencies only get fired at the start of the round, so if your spellcaster is wounded badly, you might actually get killed before the contingency is triggered - works wonders against enemy spellcasters if you can go invisble - preferably with someone that can backstab - as they cast true sight or invisibility purge, which often gives about a round before wheir contigencies kick in.
Yet, I agree, it's irritating that contingencies don't fire as "supposed to".

When badly hurt to 50% hps, I usually run with boots of speed,
avoiding combat, to simulate the quickness that contingencies
should have!
Beside this technical inconvenient, these two are maybe
the most powerful and fun spells!
Go for it! Make a search on the forum to find some cool combinations!

Don't use the 10% option if you like to be alive when it goes off...

Otiluke's Resilient Sphere has a saving throw. If you make it (very likely), you won't be protected.

Anything which removes them from the party ends it, nothing else does. In ToB you can remove them from the party, and the romance will still continue if you bring them back quickly enough (a couple of days).

At least, it's true for Jaheira.

so that means the romance does not end. i promise. becuase if you noticed even when they're dead they stay in your party, don't worry i've done it before. and also, don't use the the 10% becuase aerie will be dead way before she can even start to use that spell.
