Crash loading Underdark Exit

Post by Puter »

I have many hours in this game. I have pulled Bodhi's black heart from her dying body, the lantern is within my backpack. Yet, when I leave any area and select 'Underdark Exit' to go back to Elthan, the game goes through "Saving Game", then starts on "Loading Game", then crashes to the desktop. Ouch...

Things that I have tried...
1) Defragging disk drive
2) Going to other areas, then to UD Exit.
3) Going back to Bodhi's Lair, then UD Exit.
4) Doing another quest, then trying.
5) Lowering all of my machine specs to "Below Min".

I can't figure out anything else to do. I do have the official patch for SoA.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Lazy option:
Back-up the save game folders and reinstall SoA
But it may not work, if the problem is in the saved game file, so...

Hard-work option:
Retreat to a previous save game (hope it´s no too far behind) and replay.

It once happened to me on BG1, with Beregost.

@Puter - have you tried deleting the files in your Cache/Data folder? :) You will find this folder in your BG2 directory...

@Leornado - I had thought of this, but wasn't sure what files I needed to keep. It sounds as if I only need to hold onto the "Saved" directory? Unfortunately, I'm not one to create a lot of saved games. I have the Auto, the Quick, and the one where it crashes. Oops. I had seen another thread that mentioned using ShadowKeeper to fix corrupt save games. I may also try that.

@Yshania - No, but I had tried moving all the files from my "temp" directory. Although new files were created, that didn't help. I'll try that folder as well.

Thank you!

@Puter, those files are usually the best to clear out when you develop any problems loading areas :) I hope it works for you, and you find your save game is not corrupted ;)

You might also try reducing the display and sound setting so that the game is using least amount of system resources possible. If the bug is related to the game over-taxing your machine's hardware, this might help.

@Yshania - Kind of you to say! I'll give it a shot tonight and let you know.

@HighLordDave - Good idea, but #5 in my original post covers that. I turned off *everything* that I could, went to 2D, the whole works. Nadda. I had tried that, but really didn't think it would help since I was in that area before when I first came out of the UnderDark.

Thanks!

***Minor Spoilers***

I have no idea if this will work or not............. but as an absolute last resort your could always just cheat and teleport yourself into the elven city and see if the game continues on as usual. You would probably miss out on some XP's but it's better than having to start over again. I would only do this if you can't find any other way of bypassing the problem.

@Arch_Angel - There's a thought that didn't cross my mind. Thanks!

Leonardo hit it. I tried Yshania's idea, but still had the problem. So I backed up my "saved" folder, then uninstalled SoA. I then reinstalled SoA, the reinstalled the official patch. Once I started the game, I noticed that uninstalling the game did not remove my "saved" folder. So, out of curiosity to see if it was the save game, or the game itself, I started it up. Lo and Behold(er), I got in!

Thank you all! I do appreciate each and every idea. The next tavern that you stop at, the drinks are on me! :-)
