For ToB it's great (esp if soloing)...
At the end of the game you will have 3 (!) 9th (and 10th!!) level spell slots (a regular mage has 4), megatraps, UAI, ...
You can also have mislead and tensor's and Improved haste in a spell trigger for MEGA BACKSTABS:
Note that if you dual wield belm and kundane with it, you'll have 8 attacks/round ( (2+2) x2 ), with a HUGE chance to hit (tensor's), and each attack will count as a 5x backstab (mislead, hit from the back, of course)
You can even do that within a TimeStop (i dunno about tensor's... must test)
So, for a ST 19 (+3/+7) char, you would do an average damage per round of:
8x 5x ( (4.5 +2 +7) X2 + (4.5 +1 +7) X2) = 1040 HP
Amazing for someone that WON'T be targeted by spells or weapons (mislead), and will have many more buffs (stoneskin, mirror image, ...)

Being an Evil Overlord seems to be a good career choice. It pays well, there are all sorts of perks and you can set your own hours. However every Evil Overlord I've read about in books or seen in movies invariably gets overthrown and destroyed in the end. I've noticed that no matter whether they are barbarian lords, deranged wizards, mad scientists or alien invaders, they always seem to make the same basic mistakes every single time. Therefore, if I ever happen to become an Evil Overlord, ...

My bias against illusionists goes back to AD&D when they pretty much sucked (all of the restrictions and none of the advantages of being a magic-user). In my opinion, if you're going to be a dual-/multi-class mage/thief, I'd pick the Invoker/Thief (human dual class). I've never found a whole lot of use for illusory magicks in BG2, so the only reason to be an illusionist/thief is if you're hung up on playing gnomes . . . and yes, I'd hurt one.

Have to agree with you that illusory magicks are not all that useful... they can however be very cheesy *cough*Simulacrum*cough*

Remember, too, there's already an illusionist/thief you can add to your party: Jan. This means you get all the benefits that Leoric has mentioned, while still being able to customize your own personal character differently--if you choose to do so.

I agree with fable. May I suggest the dual class Assassin(10)/Mage?
Illusionist/Thieves make perfect sense RPG-wise IMO. Also, one of the prime requisites of the Illusionist (besides the Int.) is the Dex.

As assassin/mage: I hadn't thought of that option. It sounds great. Assuming I don't do a wild mage on my next run through, I'll try it.Originally posted by Astafas

maverick, it depends on what race you are (only humans are allowed to dual class) and when you dual class, you dont get a specific kind of kit (illusionist or such) one can only pick illusionist/theif via a gnomish multi-class...sry mate but thats how it goes....also you need to meet the specific type of ability to dual your char...such as:theif-dex 9
fighter-str 9
mage-intel 9
etc etc
Cheers

Dualing at level 10 let you obtain 100 % in both Hide in Shadows and Move Silently. You get a 4 x backstab modifier, 3 Poison Weapon per day, faster working poison and soon regain the Theif class.Originally posted by fable

Ah, there seems to be a bit of confusion here. A multi-class PC starts out in 2-3 classes at the same time - he doesn't switch over to another class later, like the dual-class character. So, when you first create your illusionist-thief, you click on the multi-class button to the right of the class list, and then select illusionist-thief. He'll advance in both classes at the same time, throughout the game.
