Stats modifying items!!!

Post by Stilgar »

Why are there so many strenght modifying items (all girdles, some weapons and the gaunlet's) and more then enough charisma modifying items.
One con modifyer (in SoA the girdle that works for xrounds and in ToB there's another if i'm not mistaken)

And (almost) none wisdom/intelligence modifyers.

Good question ... WIS and INT would be a little unbalancing if the spell and illusion immunities were implemented but they are not.

There are almost no DEX modifiers (except the gauntlets which give 18 but nothing beyond and some sword) too. Maybe because thieving skills would be affected too heavily (5% on most abilities for each point, which is a lot)?

Because BG2 is mainly a hack and slash game (with a great storyline)... so strenght is the main stat for most characters.

ya, it seems the father along in the BG series the more hack and slash it gets. Starting in BG1 it's all quests with little fighting, TotSC adds more fighting, BG2 a little more, and then in ToB it's just a series of fights with no side quests, i think they're all great games and i'm not trying to put down ToB because i love it, but i really did like all the quests, the fighting can get kinda dull after a while.

I suspect the above is a joke, just aimed at getting riled responses. :D I got a good laugh over it, because where BG1 and BG2 are concerned, the situation is so clearly the opposite that every review I've read has mentioned the increasing quest sophistication of BG2, as have the developers (who claimed they learned a lot from PS:T). BG1 was entirely simple fighting quests like "get the Holy Chair from the Evil Ether Bunnies, and kill 100 of them in the process." BG2 also includes plenty of these kinds of quests but adds on some great puzzles (like the series beneath Spellhold, or the riddles on the bridge to the City of the Forgotten God), and quests where you just need to bring something to somebody (the seeds to the Queen in the Hills, the necromantic tome that Korgan needs for a client).

A series of fights without side quests? I suppose this discounts arranging trade between the creatures and the humans up in the Hills, the missing golem part for the mage, and the three kids who go out to play hero--all this, while you're trying to find out what exactly has been going on, there. :) -But the list is endless. In any case, if you just wanted to generate fast responses, I think this thread will do it (assuming the title doesn't drive off all but item makers). :D

um, i guess you have a point. i guess i wasn't paying much attention or something, it might just have been that the battles were tough for such a lame party in BG1. and wait, what's this quest about the bunnies? did i miss that part?

(anybody else get the feeling fable doesn't like me much? maybe it's cuz i made fun of those crazy british a while back)

@Aragorn Returns
I don't think you should take this personal, fable is just pointing out that there are a lot of non-hanck&slash quests in BG(2).

But it's nice to see Fable go off-topic for a change!!! ;) :D ;)

a) I like you fine, and b) I'm USian, not British. :D As for the bunnies, well...I don't like to give away suspenseful quests, you know. ;)

Relativity

I don't think you have seen hack n' slash until you have try Diablo II and LOD (not that there's anything wrong with that). :D

BG is a very nice rpg game that save you from typing in the actual dialogue yourself (refer to Ultima 1 - 6).

Also, for an expansion set, TOB has a supreme ending of a long running saga. If there are too many side quests, it would be called BG3 instead! :)

Back to the actual thread, some cursed items reduce your stats as well: ring of folly.

Right, play Diablo and then tell me.
The first was hack and slash with... atmosphere.
The second was just hack and slash.

@ Aragorn Returns:

How did you think fable doesn't like you? :) And how did you think BG series is a hack and slash game, in a first place?

If you are really interested in some players' views on the game, go and search the archives for a thread called "BG1 or BG2?", or something like that. It's a debate about which one was better liked and why. There you can read a lot of opinions regarding what extraordinary role-playing game BG series is!! :D

Cheers

That's why i like BG better, if in Diablo whe both have created a barbarian, and there both the same level, and when let them fight eachother, and you'll win, then if we exange characters, i would win.

In Baldur's Gate it's different, maybe not with 2 barbarians against each other, but with 2 party's it's a lot more about the player himself.
