never was so tuogh

Post by schept »

until now i never had really a lot of trouble killing enemies. But now it seems like i'm really stuck. I'm fighting the mind flayers and umberhulks in the underdark and i just can't beat them.

I tried a lot of techniks and strategies from this site, but i allways get killed. I use as much protection, shields, magic turning stuff as i own and still they kill me. The problem is that they suck my inteligence and kill my caracters in no time. The second problem is that i can't predict in which chamber they appear. Sometimes they appear in the "first" room, sometimes in the second and sometimes in both.

Can someone please help me I've been trying for hours now and it's getting pritty frustrating.

Have you tried casting the cleric spell "chaotic commands" on your party members....this should partially protect you.....

also...if you go to the beholder dungeon, stuck in a cranny somewhere is a greenstone amulet, which is very helpful against mind flayers. Check in the walkthrough section of this site and it should give you the amulet's exact location ;)

this is what i did....get your best warrior ( mine was anomen )...equip with best equipment. get chaotic commands plus greenstone amulet. boots of speed. make rest of team invisible and keep them to one place only. they do nothing at all. now start conjuring up skeletons and invisible stalkers. get anomen to open doors up and then lead any mind flayers out to meet your ' team' of conjured creatures.by the way , they are immune to psionic blasts. creatures kill flayers. keep a little close to the action so you can direct all of them to gang up on umber hulk first since they do most damage to your creatures then take out mindfs. continue in this fashion resting whenever you need to in order to renew spells.hope this works for you.

Invisible stalkers are much more useful, for umberhalks sooner or later will crash your skeletons down.

With greenstone amulet you have a really good chance to finish quickly. Try also to feed up your party with potions of genius or mind focusing --you can buy a lot of precious and crusial minutes.

Good luck!

Cheers

inv stalkers are a great defenive summon, but skellies with mass inv and haste are just as resistant to umber hulks and much more lethal.

also if you have fighter mage try mislead...

I can typically kill all flayers using mislead and chaotic commands, for area effect of mind blast
They call me Darth...

Darth Gizka!

Skeletons: definitely the way to go. No intelligence to drain. :)

And don't forget those potions you can make in that area which provide a brief immunity to the illithi.

Use the Wand of Monster Summoning to keep up a steady flow of fodder to absorb all of the illithid psionic blasts. Then pound away at them with missile weapons (Tansheron's Bow, Sling of Everard work best). When you run into umber hulks, either use Cloudkill to destroy them or summon invisible stalkers who put up much more of a fight than hobgoblins. Just be sure to keep as many flunkies as you can between your party and the mind flayers.

I first have my thief or mage equipped with Staff of the Magi scout out the area (this holds true for all mind-flayer dungeons in SoA and ToB). If there are Umber Hulks present, my mage quickly gets rid of them with Death Spell.

I then send in a distraction for the Mind Flayers, like a Mordenkainen's Sword, Invisible Stalker, or Skeleton Warrior. Then party fills them with arrows and/or thief (protected with Chaotic Commands, Amulet, Ring of Free Action or Brine Potion) backstabs them, leading stragglers over traps.

Edit: Using potions of Genius and/or Mind Focusing here helps to make the INT drain a lot less deadly if your character does get hit.
There's nothing a little poison couldn't cure...

What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

To avoid death by INT drain keep an eye on your fighter's stats and rotate the fighters if INT goes below 5. Have one recovering and one fighting, they recover pretty fast from the drain. Potions of genius also help. The umber hulks usually can be killed by area effect spells. Illithids without umber hulk guards can be backstabbed.

I've never found a "silver bullet" for the battle against the Elder Brain's personal guards, they're somewhat though. Make sure to have a lot of healing potions on your fighters before entering the Elder Brain's room.

did it

aha i finally did it.

I used a combination of strategies. I summoned the skelletons and let my hasted group range atack them. I put chaotic command on them, so the mindflayers couldn't do their range confuse stuff

well thanks for the tips

i'll let you know when i'mn stuck again :D
