Which bow is better?

Post by Moleman »

Poll: which one do your prefer, Longbow of marksmanship or Composite longbow +1?!?

stats:

Longbow of marksmanship
THACO +3, damage +2
speed factor 5

Composite longbow +1
THACO +2, damage +3
speed factor 6

I agree, better a chance to hit than an extra damage that might not happen. Plus with the Long Bow, elfs get another bonus to hit. The game's archers, Kivan and Coran, both get this.

Look at the stats on each... Longbow of Marksmanship gets extra THACO bonus.

Ok, it's not that i disagree with you. I too choose the longbow of marksmanship - usually.

But don't you think that it is possible to lower THACO by other ways (bracers of archery, gaining levels, Kivan/Coran using the bow etc) so much that is almost certain hit every time. Wouldn't then extra damage come in handy?

Don't forget the lower speed factor!
Longbow of marksmanship without a doubt!

Yeah, well, how much does that effect, really? Is there really a big difference, isn't "Number of Attacks" measured by 1/2's, so will the difference of 1 in speed factor increase no. of attacks by one step (for example from 2 1/2 to 3)?

Long bow of markmanship, it's the best weapon in BG1 besides Spider Bane.

That's not completly true,
don't forget Drizzt Weapons (to powerfull), and the eagle bow.
And there are some powerfull weapons in Durlag's Tower!

Well, it seems that my archers (usually Kivan + Coran) always bag themselves most kills in game, so I would say that the bows mentioned in the subject are the 2 best weapons in the game (although, i don't have TOTSC and therefore don't have weapons from Durlags tower).
Spiders bane is great because of the free movement it gives, but otherwise I always prefer one-handed swords and a shield, Long Sword +2 "Varscona", for example.

I didn't take ToSC and Drizzt's weapon into account. Nevertheless I personally value Spider's Bane as high as Drizzt's weapons and I don't see a ToSC weapon that really rivals it, but I haven't played ToSC for quite a while. IMHO Spider Bane's free action ability is somewhat valuable in BG1 (I know that there is a ring of free action in the game but with SB I can wear a different ring).
