I've just started a Kensai to be dualled to mage and I will play it with a party through SoA and then install ToB:
Kensai can wear Ioun stones (it seems they can't wear helmets so they shouldn't wear Ioun stones)?
Which level is the best for dualling (9, 12, 13 or 15)?
Suggestion about weapons and style: I'm thinking of giving mastery in l-swords (3 or 5 +?), dual wielding (two or three +?) and the eventual rest of proficency points in Katanas (or maybe flails?).
Thanks
Advice for a newly started Kensai-Mage
I say dual at level 9, even if you plan on playing ToB (which you should, of course). You get most advantages of the Kensai while still regaining this class pretty fast. Because it is a Kensai/Mage you want to play and not an ordinary Kensai the first half of the game and then a low level Mage the second half, right?Originally posted by lompo

Go for Katanas (dual wielding Dak'kon's Zerth Blade and Celestial Fury) and Staves (Staff of the Magi). Plenty of nice Long Swords as well, of course.

Life seems short considering how long you will be dead.

I have also another questio about the stronghold, if I take the fighter stronghold (as a kensai) and then dual to mage, would I be ablo to get the mage stronghold too?
Or if completed the de Arnise keep quest while still a kensai and refusing to take the keep, then dual and take the mage one, could I still go back to Nalia and accept the Keep (maybe after regaining the kensai ability) as I read is possible for multiclass?

It would be easier in italian...
Anyway. My opinions.
DEFINETELY go for level 13.
Keeping maybe the number of party member below 5 (or 5).
The thac0 will be more than enough, and the number of attacks will be maximum. More than this will cause only a delay in reaching an higher level with the mage class.
Maybe if soloing you could do otherwise...
Dualwielding, no doubt. Three stars.
And GrandMastery for roleplaying purpose.
(but if you're interested in details, see this mad post of mine)
About the weapons, it's your choice, but I would do the exact opposite. Being a kensai, katanas would fit better, IMHO.
Remember that there are at least TWO great katanas (in SoA), and
one of them is one of the few items specific for fighter/mages.
Later you could spend some points in long sword.
Here it's just a matter of opinions anyway..
One last thing: if you have it, I would install ToB from the start.
P.S.: fidati di me, che sono un conterraneo, ehehheh!

i think 13 would be the best level for a kensai to dual class to a mage. if you look at the exp table, level 9 kensai gains only one more mage level faster than a kensai dualed at 13. For mages, level does make a factor but in ToB there is no difference at all (that is, if you reach maximum level).
Also, at level 12 you get extra -1 THAC0 and +1 damage i think it might be more im not sure. definite advantage. at level 13, you get -2 or more to all saving throws. kensai/mages doesnt need saving throw desperately (since they have all kinds of protection magic) but surely it would help out a lot
level 13 kensai only takes about 125000 experience points so it doesnt make much difference although it would be harder in the beginning. if its too hard just go up to rejiek hidesman and do that experience leech bug thing, or get a mage, buy melf's acid arrow (from a vendor that has unlimited number of scrolls; bookkeeper in waukeen's has sunfire unlimited, i think) erase and copy and erase and copy until youre level 13
as for weapons, i would definitely go for long sword or katana or mix and match dual wield, but bastard sword is ok when you get to ToB. also, i tried axe once its really fun get a throwing axe and kill em from distance... in ToB, best long sword (the answerer +4) has speed factor of 9. so id rather go with hindo's doom and celestial fury... if you still want long sword (they look cool) i used equalizer and black razor (possibly the best sword in the game)... if you arent evil steal it from djinni
another thing... dont be fooled by staves... they have enormous damage, yes (+10), but really not that efficient... the spear ken/mage i used to play used impaler(+10 piercing damage i believe) was fun and looked cool with shiny robe and long pike but he was WEAK. somehow piercing damage does not bypass magic resist or saving throw... i dont know about staff of striking but i dont think it will work well either.
NEVER try to kill a humanoid with staff of magi...pathetic damage

BAH. I wish you all well on this relatively good day.
