soloing with pure assassin

Post by leeman_s »

Do you think it is possible to solo with a pure assassin? That's what I'm trying right now. My best damage in Irenicus' Dungeon is 52! Just do hide in shadows and backstab. If you're hasted, you can run away to give time to hide in shadows again, and backstab again. And also I can beef up is HP to 99 with casting vampiric touch, and two larlochs minor drain on myself. Don't know why but it works. I have to patch too. Anyways, I am now going to try to solo with him. Has anyone else done this?

Don't forget to get the staff of magi, as you can go invisible when equipped. So you can backstab, invisible, backstab, invisible. Also you can get more cheesy things if you have TOB... :D
Sorcery and Shadow together as one, the arcane and the dark united. Through our knowledge and skill none can stand against us. We are as one, infallible and invincible. The Shadow Mages.

Yes it most definately is :) I think you'll find that any character can be soloed thru SOA. Obviously some are much harder than others. There was a really great thread quite a while ago where someone soloed a Beastmaster through SOA and TOB, it was quite a feat :D ;)

Check out on the front page of the site and in the stratergy guides is a few accounts of people going through the game solo with different classes.

Yes, I've soloed an assassin most of the way through SoA (before ToB came out). It's definitely challenging!

Get the Cloak of Non-Detection, Boots of Speed, Mercykiller Ring, and Tuigan Short Bow, ASAP.

You can pretty much do all the quests in Waukeen's Promenade straight out of Irenicus's dungeon.

I recommend investing points in trap-setting - they help a lot with critters that can't be backstabbed, like golems.

If you have ToB, take Valygar's armor - it protects against a soloist's bane: charm. It has a WIS requirement, so drink a potion of Insight to equip it.
There's nothing a little poison couldn't cure...

What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

Get Celestial Fury ASAP. You can get it pretty darn early, all ya need are some potions of invis and a katana for good backstabs.

Spoiler

Its in the temple district, in the guarded compound. For the first floor a few monsters will spawn when you get close the stairs, just be hidden in shadows and run back to the door you entered in and wait. A demon, a djinn/efreeti, a nishruu and a few low level monsters (the kind ya get with monster summoning 2) should spawn. Since you're hidden in shadows only the demon and the nishruu should see you, and if you run as soon as they spawn it should attack the djinn/efreeti or the other low level monsters. Everything that doesn't see you will attack the demon and only the nishruu should follow you. Kill the nishruu(shouldn't be too hard even with piss poor rogue melee). I'm not sure if you can get a green protection from evil or not but it would make getting by the demon easy, possibly even killing it. I just gritted my teeth and killed it buy use'n alot of stolen potions to assist.

The second floor seems like it should be more difficult but its actually easier. Use an invis potion on the first floor before you go up and be sure you detect and disarm the traps on the second floor before you move a step (detecting and disarm'n traps won't break invis). Don't worry about true sight cause neither the mage nor the cleric seem to cast it. Backstab the mage first (he should die if you didn't miss) and drink an invis potion asap. Having autopause on enemy attack and auto pause on target gone makes it really simple. If you have high detect illusion skill i'd use it (detect trap button) to uncover and kill the thief so you won't risk eating a backstab yourself(and he/she has alot of invis potions too to make the job even easier :D ). Next kill the only human thats dual weild'n, he has the Celestial fury. Do the cheese of backstab, drink invis potion, wait till round end and repeat until he's dead. I'd loot and run at this point (don't think you can stay invis while looting bodies but you can do it while game is paused so no biggie). None of the rest have anything you'd want/need except things to sell for cash, but you shouldn't need money and there are easier places for xp. Unless you have boots of speed and high skill in hide and shadows, then backstab run outa LOS and hide in shadows cheese works really well.

So, after a few minutes of work you should have the best weapon in the game for thief, enough inis potions to break even or come out ahead with the ones you used and alot of cash from selling stuff you found in chests. Earliest i've done it was after the slavers and easy graveyard quests, but it should be doable as soon as you leave the initial dungeon.

wow, that was alot of stuff to write...

Personally I would recommend

1. Spend your first points in Bow and Katana.

Then (if playing ToB)spend some cash on proficiency in Dual wielding.

Can you say Celestial Fury and Hindos Doom. Immunity towards Deathmagic, A Greater Restore in your pocket and some dam nifty katanas!!! Maximum potential backstabbing damage ranges on levels of 150HP!!!(With a Belt of Firegiant strenght...any belt of strenght is nice though...Steal the belt in the Waukeens promenade from Ribald...If I remember correctly you can do that)

Ribuld won't let ya steal, but get'n cash for it is easy. I'd just steal from the other vendors and fence the stuff at the shadow thieves guild for the cash.

yeah

1) what other equipment is good for a theif besides those weaps?

2) does pick pocket ability help in stealing from merchants? I can pickpocket anyone, but i can't steal from stores, they catch me. Even after drinking master theif potion.

These potion effects are cumulative, so drink more of them and try again.

Some other good equipment for a thief:

boots of stealth
boots of speed
potions of master thievery
potions of perception
potions of mind focusing (+3 to DEX, IIRC, and almost all temples sell them)
ring of invisibility

As for pickpocketing, who are you trying to steal from? The bartender in the Copper Coronet is more difficult than normal to steal from, for example. Also, how high is your pickpockets %? Even over %100, you still get caught a lot. %200 and above, it gets easier...
You will run afoul of both a common misconception and a family of bears.
