Okay, I've finished Icewind Dale just yesterday, and there are some things regarding the plot that I just don't understand.
1) How does war between the dwarves and the elves tie into the over all plot? I've never actually found out why exactly the war started.
2) Is Poquelin the guy that's the impostor for Arundel?
3) What is exactly the relationship between Yxunomei and Belhifet?
4) How does Jerrad's Stone tie into the overall plot?
The plot (many spoilers)

1.) From what I can tell, it factors in because of who you need in order to make use of the Heartstone Gem and the fact that the Sverfnebli are being used. Other than that, it's just another part of the history of the area you're stuck in.Originally posted by humanflyz

2.)It's been a while since I was at that point, but if I recall things correctly, the answer would be yes.
3.)Uh...mutual hatred?
4.)Jerrod's Stone is what sealed the rift between the lower planes and the material plane(or something like that).
Hope this was helpful.

- It's part of the history of the area you're in. The rift between elves and dwarves occurred when artifacts from Dorn's Deep began showing up in the hands of the elves' mortal enemies. What neither side knew, was that a Drow thief named Nym, whom you encounter in Dorn's Deep, had been stealing the artifacts and selling them to the goblinoid armies. In his own words: "The darthiir and dwarven artifacts produced by the so-called "Time of Cooperation" were too valuable to resist. Selling the artifacts to the goblinoid armies was the best business decision I ever made. It had so many angles to play. The stupid goblins went bankrupt just to buy artifacts that they couldn't use properly. The dwarves who were threatening to attack some drow outposts were implicated, and the darthiir slit their own throats when they decided to wage war against the goblins *and* dwarves. Silly elves."
- Yep.
- They're opponents in a conflict known as The Blood War - a war between the Baatezu and the Tanar'ri. From what I gathered, these two let it get a little too personal between them, hence the vendetta.
- If you ask Everard about Jerrod's Stone at the very beginning, he tells you about a desparate mage who opened a Gate to the lower planes - which Jerrod sealed with his own body. Belhifet obviously wanted to re-open the Gate, to let more of his kind through.

What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

The blood war is basically a conflict over alignment, the Baatezu are Lawful Evil and the Tan'ari are chaotic evil, they disagree with each other on every issue, and due to this they fight and on a large scale, the plot of Planescape follows this situation in an interesting way.
IWDs evil ones are basically spill over from this war.
It really is a fascinating subject actually, i really like the frission between the two alignments
SPOILER!
@Sorjourner, i really want them to weave Nym into IWD2 in some way. They might even weave Labelas back in so one saves him

I'd have to get drunk every night and talk about virility...And those Pink elephants I'd see.
There are several quests I want to see restored. I'm actually thinking of getting my hands on some sort of script compiler and fixing them myself.Originally posted by Mr Sleep
