I have currently decided to play a half-orc barbarian in SOA and a new problem has arisen. I want to pick only Keldorn up for my party but I need to know whether the level of npcs depend on what level u are when u meet them. Eg Lvl 13 protagonist meets Keldorn for the first time, therefore Keldorn is lvl 13. If u are lvl 8 when u meet Keldorn, Keldorn is lvl 8. I need to know whether if this is the system used by SOA for determining the initial levels of npcs. If this is not pls tell me the exact way inintial levels are determined.
Thanks in advance to anyone who tries to answer my question.

AFAIK the NPC's level is set when you initially meet him or her.
There's nothing a little poison couldn't cure...
What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

Incidentally, what does AFAIK mean?
So if I read what you guys are saying corretly, Keldorn's level will always be set at lvl 8 no matter what level I am when i meet him......is that correct? If it isn't pls correct me. Frogus couyld you clarify what you mean ? I don't quite get your drift about npcs lvling up even when they arent in the party....sorry.

It's been my experience that an NPC joining the party for the first time will have XP similar to your main's. Meaning, if Keldon joins when your main is 13, Keldorn will be about lvl 12 or so.
AFAIK, AFAIK means As Far As I Know.

I think the highest lvl NPC get when you meet them for the first time is 12, unless it is in the expansion. That why I will try to lvl up before meeting Mazzy, Valygar and Aerie.
Also some other useful short forms:
IIRC - if I recall correctly
IMHO - in my humble opinion
ROFL - roll on floor laughing
LOL - laugh out loud
a/s/l - age/sex/location

An NPC's level is set when you first speak to him/her. For example, if you meet Keldorn as a level 10 fighter, then his level is set to 10. If you meet him at level 12, then his level is set to 12. All NPC's have a minimum and a maximum level at which you could encounter them - Keldorn will never be less than a level 8 paladin, and the highest level at which he will join is level 12 (in SoA).
