Bg2 is so good

Post by Aubreii »

*****Very Minor Spoilage follows*******

The first time I played through SoA I was a Skald. I loved the class but looking back I realize that if I had had a melee heavy group he would really have shined.

My second time through I played as a fighter. Liked that too. Having a big fat tank as your protagonist allowed me to build a much different group than I had on my first trip through Amn.

I have played part way through numerous times with various classes and group mixes.

Now after not playing for months I am once again playing through SoA. This time as a Cavalier and once again I am really loving it and I now have ToB installed so the fun won't stop any time soon.

This is my current group btw:

Cavalier (me)
Minsc (Gotta have minsc)
Mazzy (my first time using her and I am quite happy with her)
Aeirie (I have had her every time. She is a swiss army knife of spell casting)
Jan (I have used him once before but this time I actually kept him instead of Imoen)
Nalia (Perfectly good Mage IMO)

In case you are wondering what the point of my post is.....there is no point. Just having fun with the game and bored at work so I thought I would come here and babble a bit.

I just can't resist a thread with no point (that is also outside SYM - will *never* forget Fable for moving my 1K celebration thread! :D ). Anyway, I totally agree that BG2 is great. I haven't been able to play much of lately myself and only yesterday started all over with a new party:

Machiavelli - Half-Elven Assassin

Valygar - we'll backstab in stereo!

Mazzy - gotta love her skills with the bow, not to mention her dialogues with Valygar.

Viconia - couldn't resist her dark skin and white hair this time. Where can you find a drow IRL?

Cernd - much better than people give him credit for. And nice to have in your party should any large cat come to close.

Edwin - with only one mage, I thought it might be a good idea to take the one with spells for two. A shame you can't keep Edwina forever, though. :D

I can not imagine what a BG adventure would be like without Minsc........I may try it next time.

@Aubreii

Much better IMHO! Statswise he's certainly nothing special so it all comes down to whether you like his personality or not. I don't.

minsc is cool - but for his skills, he seems to me kinda like poor-man's keldorn :(

I liked Keldorn a lot too. I don't have him this time because I wanted to see what Mazzy was like. One of the things I like most about BG/BG2 is putting together a party.

I think next time I play through (I am pretty sure there will be a next time) I will try some characters I have not used as much and maybe as my protagonist I may choose a class I have not played much (although I am very tempted to be a Skald again since I know how to build a party around a skald now).

It's rather boring to play fighter-heavy parties, even though I don't doubt their efficiencies, especially when supported by a Skald. What I like best is a balanced party with a bit of everything. I want lots of spells (mage, clerical *and* druidic ones), much thief skills (the game gets so much better when being able to backstab and lay traps) and the possibility to use all equipement and weapons available. I never have two NPCs using the same kind of weapon. Then I also like to mix races, gender, classes and alignement as much as possible.

hmmm....my first party was a msih mash I just picked up as I went along

skald
minsc
aerie
Jaheira
anomen
Yoshimo/Imoen

There were things about it that I liked but I must say it was pretty tough sledding sometimes.

My second party was more meleecentric and the party I have now is basically a bulldozer. I like it but that isn't to say that I may not try new things eventually. I did like some of jaheira's spells and fire elementals and Anomen was a good character IMO.

My team :

me as specialist mage

minsc
jaheira - but halfway through the game I got rid of her ( with a magic missile ! ) and took on viconia .
Jan
Imoen
anomen - the best for me.

I really enjoyed playing the mage. weak in the beginning but very powerful near the end.

You backstabbed with Valygar, or you backstabbed in stereo? :D
There's nothing a little poison couldn't cure...

What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

Backstabbed in stereo... I doubt many of you would believe if I claimed to have backstabbed with Valygar in BG1 ;) Anyway, I had only my PC (F/T/M) and one NPC as my party and it worked great. I suppose that would be possible in BG2 too.
