Another question, is it possible to go back to a previous chapter to finish quests? I assume all areas will be accesible further on in the game.

Size of chapters
Right now I'm doing all the quests I run into. I like the stories and all the stuff and xp I find. But I wonder, I'm still in chapter 2 (although running dry finally on quests), are the other chapters the same size?? Cause it will take me forever if these chapter are as big and with that many quests as Chapter 2

Chapter 2 is an "open" chapter - basically all you had to do is collect the money - but you are given the option of doing all the available quests as well. If you do not do these quests, you can come back and do them at a later stage of the game. Other chapters are not as long as 2, I think they are about a quarter or so of the size - this is if you're doing all the side quests in chapter 2. I'm not too sure though, haven't play BG2 for a while.

Chapter two has the greatest number of optional quests by far in the game, and was probably placed close to the beginning to create a sense of non-linear gameplay. You can get away with doing very few of them, and return much later, but you'll also find the level of monsters you face adjusting to your increased capabilities.
