Are you wanting to know how to give ^Qed characters portraits? Or are you saying that the custom portraits you are assigning to your character(s) aren't showing up?
The former requires you to edit the creature file. The later requires you to reload/restart the game (as the game needs to refresh the contents of the portraits directory).

Are you still having this problem? I can't imagine why a portrait won't show up after reloading. Are the files named correctly? Do they show in the customize screen?
