Is there a lot of good mage stuff in the game. Because in my opinion Baldurs Gate 1 had very little

Depends...

There's a whole lot more spells, up to level 9...
There are quite a few magic enhancing items... as well as very good weapons for mages...

(lots of powerful staves, as well as some very cool daggers and slings)

Haven't seen a whole lot of real good mage robes though...

If you download the bonus merchants from the pre-order CD (there are a lot of sites out there with them). . .

only it doesn't seem to be working right now.

. . .there's a (pretty darn) good robe, otherwise the best robes are the same archmage ones from BG1.
