Haer'Dalis and Blades

Why is it that Haer' Dalis can specialize in long swords and short swords and other blades can only be proficient?

I wasn't aware that H'D could specialise in Long Swords (he already has the specialisation in Short Swords when you get him). It's not uncommon for NPCs to bend the rules a bit. Anomen for example shouldn't be able to dual to a Cleric because his Wis is to low. Also, it might have something to do with H'D being a Tiefling (offspring of demon and human).

Probably for the same reason Aerie can be a Cleric/Mage, even though she's an elf and only gnomes and half-elves can be cleric/magi.

Probably not. Aerie was trained by Quayle (the coolest gnome ever!) and also worships a gnomish god. H'D was, and does, not.
