Urgh.. (SPOILER)

And the peces aren't replaced by the mask? Once you get the 6 pieces, the pieces should disappear, and you should have the mask so you can see the boss guardian, yadda yadda yadda
I have given up all lesser evils as inadequate to my purpose.

I think you may have encountered a bug but you can try this:
spoiler - highlight the following for spoiler (copyright@Sojourner)
the fireball is caused by the last guardian, an invisible fire elemental. In theory, you should be able to make him visible with True Sight (so without the mask) and defeat him. After that, you should be able to open the door to Strohm's Tomb. Be sure to save, though...

Or you could use shadowkeeper to give yourself the mask. If you don't have it, there is a link to get it in the Crossroads refenece thread at the top of the page.

Wasn't your inventory full? It might have dropped on the floor.

(This post originally contained an incorrect statement about the Chapel Key.)

You need to kill the Guardian before you can go through the last door. I think you need to be able to see him in order to attack him. The Mask lets you see the Guardian; otherwise, he remains invisible. True Seeing or True Sight will also work. Please note that you have to wear the Mask like a helmet (it won't work if you leave it in your inventory), and it only works if the first party member to enter the room is wearing the Mask.

At first, it might appear that there's no other use for the mask, but you should keep it because it makes a good helmet for characters such as Mages and Thieves who can't wear helmets. It doesn't provide any armor class bonus, but it does protect against critical hits, so it's as good as an ordinary helmet that a Fighter, Ranger, or Cleric can wear.

@ VonDondu --

Are you sure the Chapel key is needed for opening that door? I recall a lot of discussions in the past about this key and the fact that has no apparent usage. (I really wonder.)

What I said about the key in my earlier post was wrong. (Sorry, I was relying on a faulty memory.) I just checked it out for myself, and here's how it works.

Samia is standing behind a locked door before you meet her. The room that's full of undead creatures is to the southeast. You can either pick the lock or use the Chapel Key to open that door and meet Samia. That's the only use I have found for the Chapel Key, but it shows that the Chapel Key does have a use. (I was certain that it did something; I just didn't remember what it was.) If you can pick that lock, you don't need the Chapel Key.

Samia's Key opens the first door to the tomb. (She was standing right next to it before she walked your way to talk to you.) In fact, she tells you that it opens the first door to the tomb. That's the only use I have found for Samia's key; it doesn't unlock any of the other doors inside the tomb.

The Mask is kind of tricky. When you have all six parts, they will disappear, and the mask will appear in Character Number One's inventory. You should see a message that says, "The party has gained an item."

To reach the Guardian, you have to go through two doors northeast of the Director (the Beholder). Neither of those doors is locked. If the first party member to enter the room is not wearing the Mask, the Guardian remains invisible even if the next person who enters is wearing the Mask. If the first party member who enters the room is wearing the Mask, the Guardian is visible. (He looks like a Fire Elemental.) If the Guardian is invisible, he'll keep throwing fireballs at you until you dispel his invisibility and kill him. The door behind him to the northeast leads to the treasure, and it is locked. There's no key for the lock, and it can't be picked. If you try to pick the lock, you'll get a message saying that you could only open it by a crack before it slammed shut again. It is unlocked automatically when you kill the Guardian. After you kill the Guardian, all you have to do it walk up to it and open it; you don't need a key.

I hope that answers everyone's questions. :)

Thanks Von....that was it, I had my thief in front, checking for traps. I was second with the mask. I did get rid of the guardian though by casting 'True Vision', or sonmething like that, and as you said, as soon as he was dispatched the door was unlocked. :)
