Book of infinite spells question...
Book of infinite spells question...
How exactly does this thing work? From what I understand there is a number of pages with a spell on each page, etc. etc... but, can you flip pages backwards? I mean it says you can stumble upon the same spell more than once.. or is it just written in there more than once? Because if you can flip backwards, why is it that it says when you get to the last page you're stuck there? In short, how does this thing work, really?
Thanks for the time.

Basically, you turn the page, you lose whatever spell was there permanantly and get the next spell on the next page. You can't go back to a previous page. I never fooled with it that much, so I don't know if spells wind up repeating or if they are random. Someone may have a list as to what spells are contained somewhere. I would like to know myself if anyone has one.

It works like this: any party NPC can cast whatever spell is on the page facing them once a day. If a page is turned, the spell on it is permanently lost, and you now have the opportunity for the current spell to be cast by any party NPC once a day, etc.
But there are a limited number of pages, and due to the magical nature of the book, the only way you'll know when the book is finished...is when you arrive, and can no longer cast spells.
The spells list is randomized, so you can't tell what order the selected spells will appear in.
Personally, I just settle for a particularly effective spell. In my latest game, I've got it set to a page that casts Call Wyvern, which at least slows down anything nasty for a few seconds. After all, it's a free spell for a non-spellcaster, so who can object?

To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
When you first get it, there are two abilities: cast the spell that is on the current page, or turning to another page. Casting the spell is pretty straight forward, you click on it and you choose a target - like a scroll. If you choose to turn the page, the currect item is destroy and there is a 1 in 10 chance of getting any other pages (there are ten page in total), including the one you just have. All nine pages have the two abilities - cast or turn; the last page only have the casting ability, so if you happen to turn to the last page, you're stuck with that spell.
what spells?
So the final question is:
Which spells are in the book?
Is there a pool from which some spells are chosen, or is it random to ANY spell? This would mean you can also get highest level spells (and so even for non spell-casters). Would be great to have a time stop for a solo-assasin or something like that.
Does anybody know?

The worst sins are those which you are going to regret the most not having done them when you could!
what a pitty
these spells arent that powerfull.
Well, I will search for the fireball then and give it to Minsc or so.
Doenst help much, but better than nothing.
Isn't it possible to edit the spells? At least a bit...
Maybe that there is this unseen very very last page with timestop on it? I think this wouldn't be against the role-playing-thing. So how can I edit the spells in the book??

Re: what a pitty
Huh? Spell Turning, Invisibility, Wyvern Call, Fireball, True Seeing--these aren't powerful? In and of themselves, they've relatively powerful spells. Many people go through a nasty fight upstairs in one of the inns just to secure a ring that grants invisibility once a day. But best of all, even non-casters can use the book, and it never runs out. If it were anymore powerful than it is now, it would be ridiculously overpowered. In fact, spell-turning just may be over-the-top.Originally posted by mabrook

Everytime you turn the page, there is an equal chance of getting each page - there are 10 pages in total, so there is a 1 in 10 chance of getting each of them.Originally posted by frogus
just how random is it? It seems XanDeVir got exactly the same order and spells as me...anyway, just take spell turning and give it to a your secondary fighter...
my fault
@fable
Well, I have to admit that I made a serious error.
I didnt read the spells listing carefully.
I'm German, so I didn't recognize the spells when I read them since I play the German version of the game (with german spell names). Wyvern Call for example is called "Lindwurmruf" (I think) in the German-version. One isnt expected to see the relation immediately, right?
Alright, Invisibility is somewhat powerfull, but it depends on the way you play whether you will need it or not.
@ lompo: Alright, this is IMO the best usage for this book, too. Makes a beat-em-all-up even more easy
@frogus: You are right. I think this "random" is less random than you might expect. I got exactly the same order of spells, too. So we are already 3.

my opinion is spell turning is best spell in the book, or wyvern call if youre sorc or similar solo... it really helps a lot, absorbing 12 levels of magic. it helps because it blocks mage magics, but be aware all innate magical abilities are level ONE. which means from a beholder, you could block TWELVE death rays, from a mind flayer, TWELVE psionic blasts, and plenty of other creatures that use cheap innate special abilities (many of irenicus' magics are actually innate)... for solo non thief characters, you could use spell turning as a substitute for cloak of deflection
BAH. I wish you all well on this relatively good day.
