Is there another way to escape flayer dungeon? spoilers

Post by Mini Me »

Hi.
I am in the Underdark and i went to the flayer dungeon and went through the usual rituals bla bla you go fight now bla bla you fight us githyanki next bla bla.
So i did fight the githyanki to see what would happen (i saved outside dungeon so im ok if it goes wrong). I killed them and got taken out of the arena, then i had like 20 battles with umber hulks and got bored, so i loaded my save and im gonna do it good and proper. I was just wondering if you fought hulks for long enough anything happened.
Any help appreciated
:D

IIRC the first battle was against 4 umber hulks. After beating them I was returned to my cell and met the Githyanki.

After the Githyanki return from their battle you find out from the jailor that you are to meet them in the pit. If you do as the Githyanki captain suggests the plot will move on :)

I dont know if you even need this(tiny spoiler/stratagy) I could not kill the flayers as they charmed my stongest member and used him against my party every time. I did the beholder area first and in the northeast area you can find an amulet of protect against charm, this came in REAL handy fighting the flayers.

I believe Mini Me KNOWS how to deal with the situation!

The question is will anything happen if you kill the githyanki and keep fighting umber hulks any enormous amount of times?

Yes. I want to thank Minime for pointing out this interesting situation. I hadn't responded because I needed to get a game into the right position to test this out...I of course like everyone else always got out of the arena as the githyanki suggested.

I tried (as mini me suggested) instead attacking the giths as they meditated in the arena. (they are worth 2000 or so each) After killing them I was transported back to the holding cell. Soon the ogre guard came and took me to fight more umber hulks. I didn't have time to see how many umber hulk fights you will get right now, so I first wanted to see if you can get out of the arena at all. I know that the slayer can open the other unopenable doors in the flayer lair, so while my other characters fought the hulks I changed into the slayer and sure enough the door out of the arena opened.

I went to fight the ogre guard (toughest damn ogre in faerun as far as i know ;) ) but as I attacked him, four flayers gated in and attacked me. I managed to win the two front fight (flayers and ogre on one side, umber hulks on the other), and then went to check out the lair, when another group of four flayers gated in! They killed my protagonist unfortunately so I will have to try it again, but

THE UPSHOT IS: WE MAY HAVE FOUND A BIG OLD FOUNTAIN RIGHT IN THE UNDERDARK!!!!!

I am going to keep testing this but I want to give props to mini-me for finding this!!!

UPDATE:

Worked on the flayers some more....I was trying to be scientific, writing stuff down on my pad and everything...

First off, I went through killing the giths again: there are 4 worth 2,000 each, and then their leader -kill him first- who is worth 9,000, so that is 17,000 exp (they each have a nonmagical bastard sword and about 100 gp)

I fought 9 sets of umber hulks before I got bored - there is no treasure and no reward for the battles. each battle is 3 umber hulks, 4,000 each = 12,000 exp. There is no extra time elapsed for going back and forth to the cell. One note:::: you can rest undisturbed in the cell in between battles!

Ok, now for escaping. Slayer change opens the door, I also run up and open the other door just to save a mind control circlet - read Xyx's posts in Shadow Mages for a lot of good uses for these circlets. Groups of 4 mind flayers (9,000 exp each) gate in around the PC about once a minute. Unfortunately I lost count of how many groups but I believe it was 6 or 7? Anyway the rest of the lair is the same as always I think, but these extra flayers will gate in right next to the PC wherever you are as you do the lair - eventually they stop coming oh well. If it's six groups thats about 200,000 exp though.

So basically, here is THE NEW WAY TO DO THE MIND FLAYER LAIR:

total extra exp over doing it the regular way (assuming 10 umber hulk fights you could do more)

337,000!!!!!!!!!! woo hoo!

Bah, never did like the stinking githyanki weenies, I've always wanted to kill them anyway, thanks!!!

don't like the thought of gated mind flayers, thankfully chaotic commands last a long time, will use chain contingency...

Yeah, if your PC isn't a "flayer slayer" it's not too great. I happen to be playing a fighter thief, so I set him up with: helm of charm protection i've been wearing the whole game, ring of free action to protect from stun, one each potions of mind focussing (i call it AC in a bottle) and genius. Also had Korgan with axe and shield of harmony. Each group of flayers that came in got shredded quickly with no muss, the rest of the party waited in another room.

Now one thing I thought of was if your pc doesn't want to fight, try casting invisibity (regular 2nd level long lasting kind) I think when the flayers gate in they'll appear right around the pc, but they wont see or attack, then have Korgan whack'em. Also could use: potion of invisibility or invisibility 10' radius on whole party.

I played through the whole MF area and got out, those smug giths aren't waiting outside of course. I managed to level up my fighter/thief to the magic 3,000,000 total giving him his first ability: Use any item now I can use Carsomyr hahahahahahahaha! I'm going to go to the Radiant Heart and kill paladins with it! (rubbing hands together with sinister glint in eye)

Just once I'd like to put

No, there is no possible escape from the mindflayer dungeon. We've all been stuck there for years, but you don't hear us complaining.

*sigh* Maybe I'll write a rant. Chances are this thread is old and therefore no one reads it

jake, buddy, keldy may be a better flayer whacker.

immune to charm and hold, as per inquisitor kit, and the firkam plate armor, has got free action built in!!!! not quite as good as red dragon plate for protection, but with ardatha the drinker and shield of harmony you got a killer flayer slayer!!!

and two ring slots to allow keldy to use ring of earth control and ring of gaxx for armor and regen...

korgy is a better killer but keldy comes with perks to almost compensate, and I am also testing out whether or not charm immunity is also immunity to domination...

folks, this could make the harmonium shield almost obsolete! also the helm of char protection could be the best helm in the game!!!

OK thx very much every1, especially Jaker. It's too late to go back now, i saved over that game cos my bro gets pissed when theres to many save games. I will finish this game and start yet another, and do this. I'd also like to point out that im pretty sure the umber hulks are infinite. 12000 a time and rest inbetween? what more could you want?
once again thx very much.

I'd like to see a 3rd type scenario: If you killed enough Umber Hulks, you would've raised in status, like the jailor ogre, and would/could not fight anymore.

Anyway, huge thanks to Mini Me and Jaker for finding this fountain. 2000 exp a character per fight is not much but if you can sleep between fights.... With (a great deal of)patience one can have 8 million capped full party in Underdark

Nice way to go about those nasty Giths!

BTW, you can cap out in Irenicus's Prison, I believe, if you are really patient. There are endless supplies of Mephits, either from the Lightning Machine or the Mephit Portals. At 420 whole XPs a pop it may take a while, but it is a fountain. :D

I was actually more excited about the spawning mind flayers, but unfortunately there are only 7 sets of them (i think). As far as the umber hulk battles go, I did a game just now where I fought them 50 times, so it does seem to be infinite. (I wish something WOULD happen eventually, but it looks like a loop) I had a party set up and equipped so that I did not have to rest at all, it took about 10 hours game time to fight all those umber hulks. One thing is that there get to be so many carcasses on the ground that the game slows down trying to draw them all, only by resting do the bodies disappear. What I did was put everyone on scripts, then pan the screen over so that the pile of umber hulk bodies was not on screen - this way the game speeds up and you don't waste time.

The wait between fights is approximately 15 ticks of the clock - not bad, just long enough to cast "heal" or whatever.

It's funny that there are so many spawns in the flayer dungeon - there's the one room where a flayer spawns every 35 seconds or so, and then theres the "Brain Golems" - it seems like one spawns every 25 seconds or so until the master brain is killed.
May you walk on warrrrm sannd....
