When to go to HOW in HOF mode
When to go to HOW in HOF mode
I just finished Dragon's Eye after starting out with a level 1 party in HOF mode. Does anyone have any advice on the best time to go to HOW and TotL? My characters are all just shy of 10th level now. Also, I cannot remember if you can freely go back to kuldahar from HOW from the first time I played through. Can anyone remember?
As Goodgulf stepped onto the bridge the passage echoed with an ominous dribble, dribble, and a great crowd of narcs burst forth. In their midst was a towering dark shadow too terrible to describe. In its hand it held a huge black globe and on its chest was written in cruel runes, "Villanova." "Aiyee," shouted Legolam. "A ballhog"!
They asked each other countless riddles, such as who played the Cisco Kid and what was Krypton. In the end ***** won the game. Stumped at last for a riddle to ask, he cried out, as his hand fell on his snub-nosed .38, "What have I got in my pocket?" This Goddam failed to answer, and growing impatient, he paddled up to *****, whining, "Let me see, let me see." ***** obliged by pulling out the pistol and emptying it in Goddam's direction. The dark spoiled his aim, and he managed only to de- flate the rubber float, leaving Goddam to flounder. Goddam, who couldn't swim, reached his hand out to ***** and begged him to pull him out, and as he did, ***** noticed an interesting-looking ring on his finger and pulled it off. He would have finished Goddam off then and there, but pity stayed his hand.
It's a pity I have run out of bullets, he thought, as he went back up the tunnel, pursued by Goddam's cries of rage.

IMO, it's best to go when your party is at least level 10. You won't be able to travel freely back and forth between Kuldahar and the expansion area, though you'll get several oppurtunities to go back.

What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

You must finish HoW first before returning to IWD - Hjolder is too tired to otherwise help or he is unavailable in the story line. You can do TotL any time during HoW.
You could always re-import if HoW is too tough and you want to retreat to IWD.
I think it is best to finish IWD, then import into HoW. Some of the best items for fighting in HoW come right at the end of IWD. Conversely, there's not much that can help any more at the end of IWD that you can pick up in HoW.
Exception: Heart of Fury mode would make it possible to do HoW early and still have a big enough challenge from the rest of IWD to warrant using the items you found in HoW.

I second Gruntboy there, it's best to finish IWD first.
The breakpoint is the barbarian camp. You will arrive there after a long journey from the town, become automatically enganged in conversation with their leader, and the next free action for you to take will be, when your party is surrounded by six hostile barbarians. That means, that your party must survive the first combat rounds without any support spells, since all of them will have worn off, and it's hard to get the buffs when you are beaten and stomped by an angry mob!

Where there's a will, there is a way.
And if there is no way, then we're going to hack and shoot it clear!
