Cult in Ulgoth's Beard

Post by Nice Hobbits »

I am getting my butt kicked by the demon in the cult basement in Ulgoth's Beard. I realized after a few times that I should kill off all of the people surrounding him first to prevent him from being regenerated through them. I have cast about every protection spell I have on my party and bulked up on potions, but to no avail. I did beat them all one time, but lost a party member, and shortly after the "you have finished the Sword Coast" screen came up my main guy just died for no aparent reason.

Anyone have any suggestions or explainations?

Method 1: Buy some potions of Invulnerability or Defense, Speed, and Mirrored Eyes. Have one party member quaff the aforementioned potions (potion of Invulnerability is preferable, because it also boosts saving throws), make him/her invisible by potion/spell/stealth and send him/her down. Have the PC move into a corner and shoot all the cultists, staying out of Aec'Letec's line of sight. Then have him/her take on the Tanar'ri - running back up the stairs as necessary to heal.

Method 2: Send someone down to start the dialog and run him/her back up the stairs. Make your mage invisible and send him/her down the stairs into a corner. Have him/her cast Cloudkill toward the center. You must keep the mage down there or the spell will end prematurely. When it ends, have the mage cast it again to get those not killed off by the first one. If you're lucky, the Cloudkill will also kill Aec'Letec, otherwise send in a fighter to finish him off. (Have him drink a Potion of Mirrored Eyes first - it seems to work.)

Dispel Magic will get rid of the effects of the Tanar'ri's Death gaze, if a party member has been hit by it.

I conjured iup lots of summons. They kept the demon busy while my party offed the cultists. Speed and, indeed, dispel magic came in real handy.

To activate the whole cultist thing, you need to bring back a certain item from Durlag's Tower to Ulgoth's Beard. Speak to the dwarf in the Inn for details.

I have the exact same problem. After returning with the Soulbiter's Dagger (?) I return and the cultist take the dagger regardless of what I say and start a fight. I go to the dwarf afterwards and he says he wants his grandda's dagger back. Is there a different dagger I need to bring back? If yes, where is it???

Highlight for spoiler:

The dagger you need to bring back is the one the Demon Knight drops when you defeat him: the Soultaker Dagger. After your initial battle with cultists, speak to the door guard at the cultists' buiding and another fight should ensue. If you speak to the dwarf at this point, he should say something about a Tanar'ri. Upon entering the cultists' building, you should fight another party of cultists. Down the stairs is yet another group, who don't actually fight you, but you need to eliminate them anyway.
