The almighty druid?

Post by dragonbane »

I was wondering if there is anybody out there who knows what what it takes to develope a powerful character - as a druid.

Recently, I've gotten the red dragon scale, and suprisingly (due to my lack of exerience with playing this type of char) I was able to wear it on my druid :) . With the dragon scale, the benifits of playing this type of character brightened unexpectantly...considering that I felt like starting over from scratch again with a kensai...jk

Since my knowledge of the druidic world is heavily shadowed...I was wondering what types of equipment a druid could own to fully utilize his abilities...and if anyone had any other tidbits of advise for my character developement.

Thank you,
Dragonbane

I'd say, equip your druid with a good shield and think of him as more of a spell-caster than a fighter. Give him proficiencies in sling, scimitar, and club. As soon as you can, keep Ironskins on him at all times.

Some other spell gems:
  • Call Lightning - you can even blast vampires with this one in outdoor encounters
  • Call Woodland Beings - summons a dryad who can heal your party and create havoc in enemy parties - a good spell to use in the first part of the game.
  • Insect Plague - a great spell disrupter - will even work through Stoneskin.
  • Pixie Dust - make your whole party invisible
  • Conjure Fire Elemental
  • Many of the 7th-level spells
There's nothing a little poison couldn't cure...

What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

That may be pretty hard if he's not a dual or multi Fighter/Druid. There is a Buckler +1 to be found in Mae'var's thieves guild IIRC, though.

The club Blackblood is very nice (+3, blunt damage works on most foes and acid takes care of trolls and goes through Stoneskin) as is Gnasher (+2 club that poisons the ennemy - great for ennemy mages). Should you prefer a scimitar, I'd go for the one that gives you an extra attack (scary how fast you forget the names). There are also plenty of good spears to be found. I prefer darts to the sling since they give you a higher rate of fire and because the sling is the only ranged weapon your cleric may use (unless you're a dwarven cleric yourself).

Staff of the Woodlands+4 is a good choice for druids.

You get it pretty late in Suldandessellar as a reward for freeing Rillifane in the temple. But it's worth it!

If you are not for a fighter-druid I think staff are good choices, apart from the staff of Woodlands that you get late, there are other good ones you can get early in the game (staff of Rynn +4, staff of Thunder etc), also spears can be good, but often staff have spells included.
Shield for druid are poor, so shield-weapon combo will not give you big improvement in AC (better use ironskin for defense), so leave this combo to fighter-druids (jaheira).

Rather than rewrite it, I have discussed my druid here http://www.gamebanshee.com/forums/showt ... genumber=1

I have since learned that a BG1 druid dualled to fighter at the end of BG1 cannot take on the Avenger kit in SoA :)

@Yshania

I know it has been said in the thread, but I must say that you have a nice Druid going for you :)

Never played a druid all the way, (after all, we have Jaheira) but the insect plague and those other things have convinced me to give it a try.

Druid Grove, here I come!

@BF - thank you :) I must admit, even in the early stages I was impressed by the Avenger kit...though I have never been one for uber characters...and this is not one...I was impressed that she could tank as easily as Jaheira, yet have a better spell book. Later on, an Avenger way outshines the fighter druid...

The main downfall is the limitations with respect to weapons...they could have given us a better choice of scimitars IMO :)

Yeah, they are more of a spell caster than a fighter, unless multi class or dualed.

In any way, staffs are the safest bet if you play pure and clean, because there are alot of them, you wont get stuck with a +1 for too long.

3 staffs of elemental summoning in the game (all +2), earth, air and fire, these staff gives free spells like invisiblity too. They give you elemental armies... perfect for beholders.

Staff of Thunder and lightning.... cleric's staff+3 or staff of striking in early to mid part of game.

Staff of Woodlands and Staff of Rynn to kill that lich.

For spears and for dual wielding clubs and simitars, you may be find yourself lacking seriously adequate ones in some point of time in the game.

If you want more variety perhaps try custom items. Craig and Sabre made a lot of them!

You can also buy the staff of Arundel (druid only) from the bonus merchant in the Copper Coronet.
If you are not a fighter druid don't go for dual wielding, with only one * your thaco will sucks!

The main disadvantage with this staff ís that the extra spells disappear should you unequip it. Which you have to do in order to use a distance weapon...
