I wonder if anyone can tell which of all valuables are actually needed for more than money. I know you need a diamond and that blue stone for the horn of valhalla, but are there others?
A rouge stone is also important (Just one) for a high-level encounter in the brigde-area.
Besides these I don't think there are any other gems that are important - besides stones that look like gems, but aren't gem (in the asylum for instance there are 3 gem lookalike stones - but they can only be used in the asylum)

at http://members.home.net/mrkevvy/ (sorry dont know how to do hotlinks... )you can download an override which will put a rogue stone clue in the guarded compound therefore linking 2 'loose' areas and save you some cash

The guarded compound is not actually a "loose" area - you get a tip for this area when doing the "Nalia-Gets-arrested-quest".
my mistake, you are totally correct of course...however its nice to tie the rune to something coz that is pretty loose...i think the book seller in Umar mentions something about messing with the rune but when you finish the skinner in trademeet it seems to fizzle out...
IMHO I don't mind if it is a loose area - because it would be stange if all events in such a city was somehow connected to eachother, wich seems to be the case.
One of the things I only discovered on my second time through the game was the god from the "Unseeing Eye" is the same god that the temple ruins from "Umar Hills" belong to. Kinda cool - but still a bit much

i like the idea of there being a big nasty conspiracy running everything (probably played too much DeusEx) as there was in BG1...the rune encounter just seems a bit 'plonked' for my taste considering how tough it can be and how important the reward for beating it is.
I think the god is Amanuator (excuse spelling)
About the twisted rune - DO NOT GO THERE if your party has an avarage level below 16. The toughest quest I have done so far (even though I was a lvl 19 sorcerer soloing).
Vicsun, I certainly agree with your assertion that you are an unpleasant person.~Chanak
Deus Ex was not too short. I like a game that leaves me wanting more than a game that seems to drag on. And it did take 30 or so hours to finish so its not like you could do it in a few sessions.
