I just looked through the entire torgal.dlg and found nothing about sorcery or magic or anything like that. However, it several places, it makes it very clear, they're reward is in "meat and land".

Its not torgal who mentions sorcery, it is infact glacius lord de arnise's old bodygaurd he says "And now I shall destroy you for my now master, whos sorcery has shown me the way"

personally I go with the mind flayers as glacuis seems psionicly dominated... mindlfayers are capable of using conventional magic as well so the sorcery remark shouldnt rule them out + there are umber hulks with them and considering the whole sewer deal you know the mindflayers are up to something in amn, thats my 2 cents anyway

I would say the most logical answer is the roenalls. It is the only thing that makes sense. The roenalls need lord d'arnise dead to take control of the keep. Even with the arranged marriage to Nalia, it could be some time before lord d'arnise kicked off allowing the roenalls to take power. Then again, the roenalls did seem to be rather weak and if they are so wealthy that they paid torgal and his clan to invade the keep, why the grab for more power?.

Mind flayers are an interesting idea. Perhaps it was supposed to be related to the mind flayer dungeon in the sewers. IIRC, in the mind flayer area in the sewers there is a note talking about the mind flayers gaining power in amn and inflitrating athkatla or something? That mind flayer dungeon does seem rather random after all.

Probably just some random mage had gotten really sick of fighters always getting the cool castle/keep strongholds and decided to get even by scoring one for himself

Craig might be right here (I suppose)...

One might ask how an excellent fighter like him would be dominated so utterly by a weakling creature like the Yuan-Ti Mage, though.

every body has said some REALY intresting stuff, but i think the best posibility is Firkrag(red dragon) cause he is rich he has a lot of magical abilities, he might not have shown any during the fight, but he still can have mind control abilities, and he does want to have the lands to him self, so i think he is the best candiaite to this debate.
