iron gollums, romances & few npc's
Hi.
a) how do you kill an iron gollum? yes, I am at de'Arnise!
b) how does one initiate a romance?
c) If you play with less npc's does the game adjust and have you fight less creatures/enemies?
thanks so much. I am still very much a newbie.
I need to buy BG 1 now!
later days.

a) any +3 will do it. Particularly useful are Halbreds, 2 handed swords, and the Sling of Everad because its always possible to get Iron Golems stuck somewhere near where they are and you can kill them outside of their range (doing so with a halbred or two handed sword is tricky though, as you have to position yourself just right to be out of range of the golem)Originally posted by Bettermirror

b) the npc will intiate the romance with you. youll have to wait around. Happens only outside and usually like 10 days after you get the npc.
c) ToB does in certain areas, not sure about SoA

AFAIK, the number and strength of enemies is not dependent on how many party members you have but what level you are at.Originally posted by Bettermirror

So if you are playing solo, you will still meet the same number of enemies in a certain encounter; eg ambush, vampires, adventurers, beholders, etc. The same enemies will have more hps and at a correspondingly higher level if you are at, say, level 30 rather than level 10.
For the romances you also can't be a half orc or dwarf and I don't think you can be a gnome.

gnomes can sleep with aerie....
if you feel manly and want to try bashing golems hand to hand, cast str spell, lv 2 or 1 mage spell on them...they typically run around 25 str or so, so dropping thier str to 18 makes them bash you less harder.
g deathblow does not work on iron golems, just flesh and clay.
melf minute meteors or energy blades do a good job, especially if you play assassin mage and poison it...
just wear them down at range..thats the trick...

I dont like Korgan, I recruited him to trigger his book quest, and asked him to wait at the inn, then I went to do the southern tombs to clear the way for him, and when I returned to the copper inn, he wants me to pay 500 gps to get him back! What an idiot, so I punished him by selling all his stuff, his magic axe worth 450 gps, but other gear still wouldn't make up for the 500 gps I paid him.
After the quest ends I kicked him out of the party. When I have a spare flesh to stone spell I will turn him to stone, Hendrak will be pleased to have an extra statue as decos in his inn.

You need weapons of +3 enchantment or better to hit it.Originally posted by Bettermirror

If you have Nalia in your party, you can have her help whack the iron golem by casting Polymorph Self and shapeshifting into a flind. The flind form carries a +3 halbard and has a pretty decent attack.
There's nothing a little poison couldn't cure...
What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

There's also the cheesyway of getting rid of the golems:
- Finish the rest of the quest first (killing Torgal and all) so you won't have to come back later
- Move your party to the stairs that lead down
- Hasten one of your chracaters
- Have him/her grab al the goodies from the room
- Run like heck to the stairs and escape the golems without throwing a single punch.

In the keep, my way of killing the iron golem was to kill all the others first, then get everyone outside the little archway leading into the hall. The i would run in with a hasted guy with lots of health andtrigger iron golem. Then i would run to the rest of the party and the golem cant get through the door! I laughed my head off the first time it happened. Then you just throw some melf's meteors or something at it. Absolutely no harm done to your partY!

Have you ever heard any more inspiring or logical words? I sure haven't.

IMO, the game hasn't been designed to be played with less than 6 characters in the party because with a small party or solo you level to fast and also find the game *too* easy after playing awhile - minor editing is necessary.Originally posted by Bettermirror

Assuming you went to keep D'arnise early on as the game encourages you you're not going to have many +3 weapons, but you can still beat the golem with whats around and without any cheese. There is the +3 axe in the statue in the golem room. If thats not enough then of course you can wait til you kill torgal, make the FoA and that works great. As I recall the ring of earth control in the keep also works to charm stone golems so thats another option.
I know this is an old thread but I didn't want to start a new one for this...
Would this be included in the boxed set or would I have to download it?Half-Orc can romance Viconia if you pickup the bug fix at Baldurdash (it was originally planned but not implemented)

The Baldurdash fixes are available with the G3 Fixpack for the game. Its an unofficial bug-fixing and exploit-fixing patch that you install on top of the official patch, and can be found here.
If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do.
Anpther way to kill Iron Golem, is to place a bunch of traps in the room, and having the golems all walk over them, things like that. Eventually they will all die, or be severely injured.
