Embarrassing newbie problem :(

This is so embarrassing to ask
How do I show the captain of the guard my release papers?
I got them in my inventory, I can select them, read them, drop them, pick them up...what I can't figure out is how to SHOW them to the guy

If you are talking about right after you set up your character - make sure the papers are in your inventory - then go over to the guard by the door and put the cursor on him so that his name comes up on the screen - then hit the spacebar. He will open the door and let you through - get all the loot in the next room before you go to see the captain.

Same thing with the captain - just hit the spacebar to bring up the dialoge box when your cursor is on him. You can ask him a few questions about the town while you are at it.
