Problem with Lavok

I completed the heart subplot and received the xp for it but when I go back to talk to Lavok he keeps telling me to find him a heart (when I dumped my two extras) or go finish the quest (if I keep the extras). Anyone know how I can initiate the end of this quest?

Did you put it in the Planar Sphere engine?

Unless you're talking about putting the heart into something else completely different.

So you put the heart into the machine that was surrounded by walk ways and Golems? If so then there's a bug with the game, use this code: CLUAConsole:SetGlobal("PowerObsidianSphere","GLOBAL",1) and then talk to Lavok again.

If you don't know how to use that, then go to the folder where you installed BG2, open the file called baldur.ini and add in Debug Mode=1 below [Program Options]. Save the file, close it and load up your savegame; press CTRL + SPACE and type in the code - the place where you can type it in will appear at the bottom of the screen, press CTRL + SPACE again to get your bottom panel back.
