From pnp AD&D, it is feasible, but if it's in BG, will the game interface be changed totally or will large battles with normal BG interface be possible?

I remembered a recent MOD where there involves large scale battles and fights on dragon backs.

I think there might be an issue with the amount of actions and movement going on on-screen, which is probably why they use to current spawning system to represent "armies" (like Yaga Shuras camp, instead of an actual army, the guys just spawn)

But if that isnt an issue, you could probably even just mod it. Its fully possible otherwise. To command the army you could just have dialogue options (things are going badly where you are on the battlefied, so you talk to a lieutnant and tell him to committ the reinforcements here, then later a messenger runs up and says that the right flank is in grave danger, normally youd have the option of committing your reserves there, but you used up your reinforcements, oh no! Even though you are winning where you are standing you could still lose the battle!) Everything else would fit into the existing structure fine
