Post by Mr Sleep »

I heard possibly the most appaling musical evolution ever last night, Gareth Gates does Light My Fire.....has there ever been a worse cover, someone please tell me there has otherwise i might have to go on a mass killing spree of Pop Idol

BTW i was too appaled to find out who it was but my brother reckons it was Gareth Gates ;)

Yes, please do. They can always clone some more, it's not like they aren't all copied from the same cells anyway.

Heresy! Thou shalt not sully the music of the Doors with thine made-for-TV-populist-horse-puckey!

Sleep, get in line. I have hot pokers to apply liberally (and sasdistically) to anyone engaging in such sacrelige.

Have you ever heard Richard Harris doing MacArthur Park?

Not to mention the Leonard Nimoy albums.

Ooh, sacrilege! Just you wait 'til Yoda week is over, sweetie. :D

I took my username from the live version of The End. It's not so much the Doors, it's more Jim Morrison who was a legend. And I have the same birthday as him.

David Hasslehoff - He is huge in Germany (aparently)

One of the best covers I have heard is Mike Flowers (I think that is his name) singing Radio Head's "Creep" in a club/caberet style.

And (not strictly a cover) has anyone heard the barnyard version of 9" Nails "Closer. I have never heard anything more funny in my life. Gives new meaing to the term "Grunt Boy" (Sorry Grunty :D )

I've always wondered why people feel the necessity for cover songs and tribute albums. I am of the opinion that unless an artist can cover a song and add something so significant to the song so that it sounds nothing like the original version, then there really is no need to record it again. For instance, Eric Clapton covering (re-recording, really) Layla for his 1992 Unplugged album was significant enough to re-release.

However, did the world really need another version of Smokin' in the Boy's Room when Motley Crüe covered it on their 1985 Theater of Pain album? Of course not.

My lone exception to this opinion was when Faith No More covered Easy by the Commodores. The rendition was so uncanny that my mother couldn't tell the difference between Mike Patton and Lionel Ritchie. I don't really think that the cover was very good (it wasn't) but the novelty of a band like Faith No More singing a Commodores love ballad is just too good.

I just think that unless you can make a song measurably better by covering it, the song should just be left alone.

The worst cover i've ever heard is And One doing Alphavilles Big in Japan. It seems like the "vocalist" is about as drunk as one can be and still be able to succesfully form words.

A good cover is Laibach version of Zager and Evans in the year 2525. Its a whole new song.
