Covers, why?

i quite liked the live (and quite drunk) Travis cover of 'Hit me baby one more time'. it's probably the best thing travis have done, cos it's actually happy - albeit in a p*ssed-as-a-newt kinda way

@Sleepy - Little Earthquakes is a great album

If we are talking covers we like, I would opt for Garage Inc especially Metallica's covers of Turn The Page, Stone Cold Sober and Whiskey In The Jar

One of the many occasions I saw them live they were supported by Danzig, and Glen Danzig stepped up to sing lead vocal for Metallica's cover of the Misfits' Green Hell! Fantastic!

We are in complete agreement here

Making a cover of a song that was originally sung by somebody with an extremely good voice (like Patty Labelle) is always difficult, but All Saints failed worst than most. I didn't especially like Li'l Kim et al's version either, but it was at least better.

That reminds me of another cover I liked - Metallica once took the opportunity in the US MTV awards show (broadcasted live all over the world), and played a cover of Anti-Nowhere league's "So what". Anti-Nowhere league was a British punk/new wave band, and the lyrics of "So what" certainly gave the producers grey hair since it couldn't be beep out

@Ysh I have several Tori Amos albums, but that one is bad... I haven't even listened to it all, I couldn't face it

@Sleep I didn't watch Pop Idol, but as I understand it, they had to prove they could sing in various different styles each week, so all they proved was that they were good at emulating other people's styles.

@Craig so, you're the reason Steps split, are you?

@CE yeah, All Saints' cover of Under the Bridge was pretty dire as well...

@Robnark because they were taking the piss rather than taking themselves far too seriously, that cover of Britney is probably among my favourite Travis tracks

On the other hand, the Corrs version of Hendrix's Little Wing is just wrong. Hmmm... the Lemonheads version of Mrs Robinson isn't bad.

Bob Dylan himself said he preferred Hendrix's rendition of All Along The Watch Tower song over his. Possibly one of the best compliments he has ever given.

It's impressive really, because you wouldn't have thought that it was possible to remake that sound and make it so much worse... of course it would help if it was actually within her vocal range

that was while she was in the spice girls. When she left they took the computer chip which had been controlling her brain out, and since then her vocals have ranged from Flat C to Slightly Breathy and Marginally More Manly-Sounding Flat C.

actually, the slightly more manly sounding flat C is an entirely studio made note cunningly edited into her *ahem* "singing". they were going to try edit her voice, but it was impossible to improve upon it - as the old proverb says, 'you can't polish a turd'
