help with EQ/quest selection?

Post by Thrar »

my current game, as (ranger-)archer, i plan on going with Ano, Yoshi/Immie and later Sarevok.
The problem is, i want to get Immie asap, and still have decent stuff around. Now with all the improved AI and such (i have Kelsey, Sola, Tashia and some more stuff installed) i guess it will b impossible to get staff of the magi or gaxx w/o major cheese early, but i could use some suggestions on what quests to do, and what can wait for later in cpt6.
currently i am at 400k XP, yoshi a little more, and Ano 900k cuz he starts that high. only 3 party members, and i dont want to have more than 1.2 million XP when getting immie, so i cannot do that many quests (neither do i want that lesser XP mod).

what r ur suggestions on stuff i really should get, and which quests to do?

d'Arnise (sp?) Keep, Umar Hills, Windspear, and Trademeet are the 4 major quests. Id have to say d'Arnise Keep and Umar Hills are must finishes for equipment reasons.

The key is to leave the town quests for later. From what you said it sounds like you want to rescue Imoen quickly from an Exp perspective, not a time perspective.

The quests immediatly in town can be done very quickly and get a lot of experince, but doesnt yield a great selection of equipment. The quests outside of town are all dungeoun crawls, yield great loot and experince, but take time.

I just started a new game and solo'ed to 1 million Exp in less then 3 game days of time, and thats just totally simple in town quests. But it only yielded about 30,000 in gold all together if you sold off all the equipment and ****. The best weapon I got was the Staff Spear off Xzar and Arbanes sword from the first "random" encounter =/

So anyways, if you are trying to leave lots of experince for after you get Imoen, do the out of town quests (especially Umar and d'Arnise) and leave the in town ones until chapter 6.

I'm not sure how many of those you can do before you run into your exp limit since you only have 3 people. I'd definitely try to do Umar for the nights gift and/or shadow dragon scale and the +3 sling. I'd also try to work in first level of watchers (dont open the seal to level 2 just get the containers and stuff on the level). Next on the list I'd probably put druid grove for the bracers of archery and the shield of harmony. Gauntlets of dex would really help since Ano is your only tank type, but that might be hurting your exp limit since thats a big quest. On the upside if you did the unseeing eye quest you'd be able to upgrade the mace of disruption before you leave (with mace being Ano's 2 star melee weapon and hammer of thunderbolts is probably a tough one to get under solaufein mod).

Unfortunately I don't really remember what gives good gold as I never really payed much attention to it. I dont know if that will get you enough cash to buy the stuff you'll really want.

i *tried* to get the gauntlets of dex now, cuz i have to wait til nighttime for Mook. finally i got the first part of the rod, after passing by the beholders with cloaking/invisibility, i have tried anything but couldnt kill them.
with this in mind, i imagine the unseeing eye cave with all its beholders being quite impossible, but the gauntlets r at the undead after all. is it possible to take them, and sneak behind the beholders to the stairs, or is it impossible to escape b4 unseeing eye goes down? difference is 4 pts of AC for Ano, it would b very useful.

shadow dragon no way, not with improved AI and that low-lvl. nights gift would b cool, i agree, shield of harmony and all the rep pts dont hurt either. MoD i will find in bodhis lair anyway, i have the illithium ready. i plan on using FoA with Ano later, but would b another large quest now, and he has just + in flails atm.

Yeah FoA would certainly be a good one for anomen once he gets the proficiencies, especially dualed with Crom. For some reason I had thought you needed to be given the Sarles quest to activate the getting of the illithium miniquest from the ore merchant, guess not. Is your archer using Tuigan?

I'm sorry I've never tried to get out of the Unseeing Eye lair without killing the eye so I don't know if it can be done. My guess would be yes but by no means positive. You snuck by the 3 gauth on the way to the forgotten temple thingy? I don't remember the beholders/gauth in that area coming in large groups. I think (no money back guarantee on that) it was just 1 or 2 at a time, plus that (optional) ambush by all the priests.

thx for input, i have done trademeet now for rep20 and cheap prices, XP around 900k, and ready for takeoff. nights gift is nice, but i found ribald sells another AC3 leather with some resists, even better imo.
of course i have tuigan, that was the second thing (ano was first) i got in chapter2. early game, archer ownz. THAC0 around 0, 5 attacks with tuigan, damage ~10-15, possibly fire or acid, and all that ranged. rox.
i started sarles quest, i think i will finish it when i am back in athkatla with the fake, could use that helm.
for the unseeing eye, i killed it. sneaked by the 3 gauths that in fact were 3 beholders and 2 gauths for first part, sneaked by everything to second part, killed a lonely gauth with some damage taken, killed unseeing eye ranged while it preferred to stun and attack ano/yoshi. sneaked to exit, down, past the 3 beholders and 2 gauths, up again...
the gauntlets of dex, guarded by those undead, they had a LICH with them! oh well, invisible ano in, take gauntlets, drink invis potion, go back.

my assumption now, what kind of enemies u face in certain situations does not depend on the PCs XP, but instead on those of the highest char in party. and as Ano has 500k more than me and yoshi, it got tough. blizzard trolls in druids grove, never seen them ever b4. evil buggers, good to have a ranged fighter for hit n run. i wonder if i have at least a tiny chance to make it thru underdark, with all those improved mindflayers, beholders and drow around.

Tuigan bow is the way to go for low-mid level archer IMO so full agreement there. If you want max damage out of (greater) whirlwind get some profs in sling as you level up. If you have decent str sling actually does more damage per round than tuigan but I think the large selection of special attack arrows (vs. very few for bullets) makes bow better in terms of overall usefulness.

One question though... how are you getting 5 attacks with tuigan. Are you counting a haste effect? At that stage as far as I can tell you should be getting (3 + 1/2 for level + 1/2 for GM).

i dunno. but i dont mind :) .

i had 4 attacks with the regular shortbow in irenicus prison. 2 basic rate of fire for bows. another for grandmastery (well, 1/2 and 1/2 for specialization). no idea where i get the 4th from. archers (like all rangers) start on lvl7, extra half attacks would come at lvl9 and 13 iirc, but i didnt get one on 9 (lvl 11 now).
i will check longbow when i find one, have ++ in that now, should b 7/2 attacks i think (-1 cuz not tuigan, -1/2 for not GM).

when i get the boots of speed from asylum (skipped astral prison for now), that should b 6 attacks. now imagine imp haste...c'mon who really wants whirlwind? i hope i will have deathblow in time for mindflayers, but i fear i wont.

archer r0x0r! :) :D

You get extra half attacks at level 7 and 13 for all warrior types. Sounds like you've installed the gm hack which is where the extra attack is coming from. The BG designers made GM a bit weaker that it was under P+P rules, so you dont get any extra attacks beyond the 1/2 for specialization (2 stars). IIRC from posts here the GM hack gives you a total bonus of 3/2 attack at 5 stars instead of just 1/2, which would account for the missing attack. I don't know if that matches the P+P rules or not.

Boots of speed don't give extra attacks AFAIK, just movement bonus.
