I alwasy cringe when I see a Mind Flayer, they are the reason my swashbuckler has 18intell. The underdark's flayer dungoun took me probably 60+ reloads first time completely through. I resorted to cloudkill door shutting to beat them.

MindFlayers

Am I the only one who find MindFlayers easy? A character with a bow, ring of free movement, boots of speed and something against confusion\charm (I don't remember any more which one I used, but there are lots of them) can take down lots of them. If he is in a big room, of course. Just shot, run, shot, etc.

All the objects are very easy to find. I know that it is not a tactic you'll be proud to tell on the inn, but well, as you were the only one to be there... People just want a good story, not the truth, right? X-D

Sure there are tactics against mind flayers as is the case with any nasty....but I really hate the damn things.....
Often, if I get a high enough die roll I will place extra points in intelligence just because of the flayers....

rrrggghh...mindflayers are a pain (in the @$$ ;) @Robnark) it's true, but Dragons are the worst. I think the fact that you are expecting them to be strong is no defence -

'So, who did you find harder in an arm wrestle: Mr. T or jar Jar Binks?'
'Well, I would say Mr. T was stronger, but I was expecting him to be strong! So I'll have to say Jar Jar.'

no contest, Dragons are mean mofos - the meanest. At a low level, that Shad Dragon had me reloading through most of the night...

fair enough, i was ripping my hair out over dragons ('cloudkill works', they said, 'just nuke it with cloudkill' - the buggers HEAL themselves  ), but i never had a problem with mind flayers - i reloaded twice in their lair, and one of those was because i did'nt know the charmed one would go hostile when he opened the door...

@frogus

ask yourself, would you prefer to arm wrestle Mr T or Jar Jar binks, eh? ;)

Mind Flyers ARE easy. Just cast Mislead... I'm speaking about the
IMPROVED version. (with Sola mod)

I've had far easier times with dragons...

Mindflayers...hands down. They come in huge numbers too, and beholders are quite easy with my naturally regenerating berserker :D and the shield of baldur/enrage

You've made my day UserUnfriendly. :)

Can I ask you, what do you think of the Improved Mind Flayers? Do you think they are too cheesy? Or are they more fun now because they're more challenging?

The current version is toned down a LOT from version 1... they used to be the 'uber-flayers'... way over the top. :D But I think they pretty ok now, but it's hard to tell what people think of them.

Littiz...i go in with chaotic commands, and ressit fear, and mislead...

still get whomped a bit, but the blue potions, of mind focus lasts 12 hours and keeps you from dying...

blucher, you might wanno take lessons from kurosian...

give the mind flayers RANGED brain suck ability, and ability to swarm,. spawn reinforcements from a spawn point, and attack in large numbers...that would be the only way to take down bun bun, the bunny from helll....i have 17 g deathblows loaded, and when i walk into a room under mislead, as long as i have a valid target, like a visible umber hulk buddy, i can fire a frag grenade with g deathblow and kill all the invisible ones...

but i would not liek to do the improved flayers without using a kensai sorc, would have murdered my original super sorc character...

damn, d jumping invisible seeing invisible brain sucking squid heads...

boy, were they fun to stomp on...i thought hey were very well done kurosian is my fav cheese monster, and i look foward to round 2, now that i have soem techs to use on him, and the falyers were very fun, and for a unprepared party, a nightmare...

it made them just so much more fun to kill...

i liked it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D

@User: I've no Bun Bun in my party... :)
And rescuing Imoen early, I have a low level party when I meet the first Mind Flyers...
The new version is really a pain..

But, they should be, I mean, they're terrible creatures in PnP.

Beholders aren't so bad

Large groups of beholders can be turned on each other fairly easily. In the underdark section I sent in a lone invisible stalker into the east side of the beholder map, where there is an elder orb and a large amount of gauths and beholders. The elder orb launched a fireball which annoyed his buddies and the all started infighting. The only thing that was left were the normal beholders. This works well against wizards who are clumped toghether with their buddies.
Mindflayers suck... especially if you have Minsce who gets charmed very easily.

I really needed to use hit and run tactics for the Mindflayers in the temple sewers (Select to read spoiler?), I had to charge them with summoned creatures and then while they were occupied lawn mowing my little minions, I would pick them off with by bow. I was a 10th level elven archer with 5 stars for the long bow and 2 stars for the two handed weapon style. (Hopefully the two handed style included bows). . Then when they finished off my minions, I would run and close the door on them. I had Kahlid's girlfriend cast some protection from mind spells on me. I repeated the process until the batch was all dead. Hehehe... :D

@Willa-I did the same thing with my archer, but unfortunately two-handed style doesn't affect ranged weapons. :(

I like the hit and run tactics. I did a similiar thing with my mage, except using haste, shadow door and cloudkill type spells. It works pretty well against the Firkraag and Sardalex well.
But still charm and intellegence drain sucks.

Am i the onlyone who use Skeleton Warriors on Mind Flayers?
They're 95% Magic Resistant and immune to mind spells!
The chew and spit'em faster the Chickittika Fastpaws!! :D :D

I recently intalled the Sola mod and i think i'll need to find some new tactics against them :( :( :(

what is that innate, mind vampirism or something like that? looks pretty much like ranged attack, save or insta-kill! is there anything that protects from it, besides getting low saves?

their THAC0 is still sucky, a tank with AC like -10 or less will only b hit on critical. shield of harmony, ring of free action and u r pretty much safe.

I use those Skeleton Warriors too. With Anomen and Aerie in my party i can summon enough of them. And since i play an archer with 5 stars in longbow, those mindflayers are gone in seconds.

Although it goes fairly easy now, when i first started playing this game they were indeed awfull to beat.
