newbie question on making a char...

Staring at the huge number of options available at character creation i was wondering...are all these options viable and balanced or do some work a lot better than others. My first inclination is to play a dark elf battlemage just due to roleplaying taste. I want to be able to just play around with my first character and be successful as well as have some leeway for screwing up a little sicne i don't know what im doing. Thanks!

I've heard on the morrowind forums that playing a mage the first time through the game is really difficult. I suggest some kind of fighter. You can still use magic and train in magic as a fighter.
