lost artifacts

I know that if you don't pick up loot after a battle it goes away in a couple of days, but what about artifacts, or game neccassary items? the reason i ask is that i think i set the short bow of Gesen shaft down in the astral prison after fighting the Warden, i'm considerably past that now and don't have any saves to do it over. I don't know how or want to spawn anything, i thinks that's cheating. I was just wondering if it will show up any where else.

Not sure if game necessary items or artifacts disapear after time. (I think they might not dissapear, but thats a guess)
However in your case -

It is gone. The main problem is that I dont believe there is a legit way back into the astral prison once you have done the quest to have a look for it. It also wont show up in another location later.

I realise that you dont want to CLUA or anything so I wont go down that route.

Pity - It makes a fine bow.

Not everything disappears - outside my temple there's still a pile of bloodstained baddie stuff lying in the middle of the path weeks after I showed 'em the error of their ways.
I've just dumped a load of artefacts inside the temple (Wave shaft, Pommel jewel, keys etc.), 'cos I couldn't be bothered carrying htem all around. I hope they stay put...

There's an almost as good shortbow for sale in Trademeet once the quests have been completed there.

Thanks for that info, but I'm another of these poor souls who get returned to the desktop every time I set out for Trademeet. I'll try it again later...
