I hate both Mindflyers AND Beholders. Difficult to cast a vote on just one of them.... :(

Cheers

Party:
Me Cleric(inactive)/Thief 14/13
Jaheira 12/13
Imoen 13
Tashia 14

entered the (Improved) Mind Flyers lair...
for the first time, I had to take an old save, and go for another
path!!!
No way.... No way.
I can kill up to three of them with buffed up swords..
But this lair is simply unbeliavable now...
I tried everything, every kind of prebuffing (yes, you heard me!!),
I simply cannot kill *SIX* of those "improved" things at the same
time (especially when three of them are Ulitharids)
Maybe I'll try again with Sola in the party
I miss my kensai/mage :(

Jaheira can do it! Buff her with potions to get 25 dex and int, ring of free action, sheild of harmony, greenstone amulet, speed potions/boots (reequip ring of free action afterwards). Lock every one else in one of the cells (otherwise they try and join the fight when the psionic effect that damages everyone goes off- don't turn ai off as the mfs go invisible so often you don't want to have to keep retargetting).

Keep reactivating greenstone periodically as there's no indication that its worn off. You can find one in beholder tunnels with 15 charges and I used about 9. Don't run away! Well don't go out of sight or they DD to the rest of your party

If you're int starts getting low just circle them till it goes back up. Gnasher is a good weapon of choice because of the increased poison every time you hit.

Keep an eye on the damage the rest of the party is taking in the cell because of that new psionic (ballistic?) and use potions of healing - it can be very damaging.

remember: do not run away or use fog of war tricks (like cloud kill)

Greenstone amulet is the key though as it blocks the mfs new wing buffet/stun attack which can be deadly. I also read that they can do emotion:kill like the githyanki do to that sailor during the sea ambush but I haven't seen it yet.

Its frantic stuff but very rewarding once you've done it...but not in terms of xp as many of the mfs dd away for ever when thet get too wounded :)

Thanx Kopywrite, I had done it at last...
I didn't have all that equipment, but the main problem was that the Flyers kept teleporting near my weakest chars, in the near room, and killed them all in blink...

Found out that with Jaheira in their room, and the other members in a VERY distant and closed cell, the Flyers *sometimes* remained there...
So I buffed a llttle jaheira, and the swords made the rest...
Only a pair of them excaped, but the Ulitharids were slain!
Go Swords!! :D

damn, I admit I used some "roleplay" cheese this time....

with a char like ano, jaheira, mazzy etc, any fighter-type that uses shields, it was not that hard for me. INT is the main problem. shield of harmony, ring of free action, chaotic commands for other party members (my archer, then).
my party only had 3 members so maybe they would have used DD more often otherwise, but it was pretty straightforward that way (not that 3 ulitharids 4 mindflayers and 2-3 umber hulks at a time r easy...). at least, the flayer area was a lot easier than beholder lair, which i skipped after a few failed attempts on the first big bunch of beholders.

Imp Dragons are hardest in my opinion. Imp Mind Flayers, Beholders can easily be taken out with a little preparation or no preparationb, but with Dragons that's another thing. They usually take me out in 1 hit and I usually have to resort to cheesy methods that actually take a little time preparing.

There is a sword called psion's blade, it makes the weilder immune to all mindflayer psi.l attacks (two handed sword +5, ToB only) Since you do not meet many mindflayers in ToB, get the sword from Yaga-Shura's enclave (in one of the fire pits) then export your charachter. You can import him into SoA, and before you get K.O. at the start of the game, press h, the pause. This will pause the game, and you can drop all your items from your inventory on the ground. When you wake up, they will be on the ground next to you. This makes no sense, but it works.

Cheese all the way people.... :) :D

Spoiler

It does not protect you from intelligence drain, and there ARE mindlfayers in tob.sendais enclave and watchers keep.

Ulthrarid, because of their two-hit kills.
Vampires, because of their level drain.

Among the rest, Protection from Magical Weapons BLOCKS
both Level Drain and Int Drain......
Maybe the only thing that protects against Int Drain...

Too bad pure fighters cannot cast it, eheheheheheheheheheh

The illithid are a pushover if your fighter types are strong and fast enough... even the improved ones. Maybe 5 fighter types all chaotic commanded and 25 int with potion + oil of speed / improved haste / whirlwind charging in and hacking away should do it.. and the inquisitors true sight is really useful, it dispels the ulitharids improved invisibility in 1 casting time. In the underdark the drow armour practically makes it impossible for them to hit you at all, unless on critical hits.

What I really don't like is fighting well-prepared parties/characters that resemble powerful ones built by a human player... unless... of course... there is space for one to store away 4 projected images... simply love those, took out sendai's sanctum with like 20 planetars and tons of abidalzims and dragon breaths...

BTW has anyone fought the Eclipse in solaufein mod? when and how do you get to fight them? and just about *how* difficult are they...
You know, this reminds me of that time... waay back...

I think they can... if you place the scroll and a potion in your inventory, drink the potion and then place the scroll in the potion slot before leaving the inventory screen......

How to kill em´?

For full protection from beholders you´ll need the Shield of Balduran which can be purchased from a bonus merchant in Adventurer´s Mart. BG2 Dragons are easy to win if you take adventage from bugs but in Throne of Bhaal...well you´ll get it down eventually with some luck. Try using the...um...well one of the sword summoning spells which summon a floating sword, can´t remember which one it is,sorry...Umberhulks go down with having an immunity to confusion.Golem go down with blunt weapons, I´m sure you all knew that already. To keep you going in ANY fight, keep some "certain monster killing helpers" in the bag of holding or if you lack one then in your inventory of course. I haven´t really figured out the way to kill mindflayers without surprise deaths but try using immune to confusion, hold or stun (Mazzy´s sword of Avoreen grants her 100% protection, maybe a bug...) and of course there is this pearl amulet found in the Beholder Cave at the Underdark but it has limited amount of uses.Hope this helps someone...
The less you know...the more happier you´ll be.

Illithids. If they use their special abilities you can be gone in two hits so you have to stay back and cast spells or shoot them with arrows or just charge in a kill them as quickly as possible. A lot less annoying once you get to higher levels though because the damage you deal kills them quickly.

They may be benign compared to many other creatures in the game, but I can't STAND mephits! They are so annoying!

But out of your list, mindflayers.
