Is project image like this in P+P?

Post by Glod »

In the P+P game does project image work the same way as in BG? In particular does casting from the image not consume spells from the original? This seems so wildly powerful that I'm skeptical, but it has been an eternity since I played P+P so I really don't know.

Don't remember how it was... yes,it's powerful,
but consider that you are helpless when you cast it.
And the image is easily dispelled by a True Sight, and
whenever you take ANY damage.
Happened to me many times...
Thus, if you use it in combat situations (no pre-casting,
pre-buffing and all...) it remains one of the most powerful
spells, but it does have its limits.
(unlike certain cloaks that prevent you from taking any
damage from spells, for example...)

Ok dug my old players handbook out of the attic. Its AD+D first edition rules I believe as it dates from the around the mid 1700s. Project image does not cast its own spells according to this. A channel exists so that spells cast by the mage appear to be cast by the image. Ahh the good old days =)

No idea if they changed it in second or third edition though.

Ahh, I remember that...was it the one with the cover illustration of thieves robbing gems from a huge statue? I wish I still had my copy :(

(Nostalgic haze decends, enters flashback with a wobbly fade) I think I might go listen to a Smiths album...on vinyl :D

Same as PnP rules. Both spellcaster and his projected image can cast spells.

Glod, you're right. Project Image in BG2 is nothing like PI in P&P. The BG2 version is waaaaay more powerful.

@kopywrite

Hrm. Mine has a mage and a couple mephitish things flying around him. I have some vague memory that this may be a second copy of the PH for me and I have an image in my head of a cover similar to the one you describe. This one has a blue background but I seem to remember one with a more blackish background and some reddish fire in the center. My early D+D days slightly predate the Smiths ... shudder. I don't even remember what I listened to in elementary school, though on the other hand I bet I don't want to know. Oh god one just hit me .... J Geils Band ... centerfold! Man they rocked if you were 9.

There certainly is a bit of nostalgia to BG that adds to the fun. I mean, its no Bards Tale, but hey. =)

@ Glod;

Yeah, at some point TSR changed all the covers to more 'realistic' versions like the one you describe for the PHB...I always preferred the more stylized versions which may have been lacking in technical skill but had tons of atmosphere. The old fiend folio with a pic of a githyanki was my favourite- I ripped that off totally for a school art competition...and won! Sorry TSR...I owe you a book token :)
