You might want to try a search in the Shadows of Amn forum (search button on top of this page). I found this thread, among other things.

parties.... yip, these one down on Devon Street, big gig too,...

If you have completed previously, you would do well to leave a certain brown monkey behind, from their its preference as neutral is middle of the road and easy to hold together a mixed bag party.

(one of) my parties= Me(Mage), Keldorn(Car..), Korgon(cannon fodder), Edwin(best mage), and then got firkragg to join (in my dreams), I left the last two open.

Now, I generally choose a party based on purely alignment to keep with RPG- Evil all the way-666

I always recommend parties of mixed alignements for the funny dialogues and to get the maximum of choises. Also, I like to have a bit of everything and to use as many different kind of weapons and items as possible. Finally, it is great if you can get the NPCs to complement eachother. Jan, for example, will usually not be a great backstabber until later in the game (low STR until you get a spare Girdle and his thief points are better spent elsewhere). Valygar complements him nicely in this matter, since his a good backstabber. As would your Assassin.

Do you have any preferences? More towards melee, ranged or spells? Any NPCs you absolutely can't stand?

Ahh............the party problems :) .............its allways nasty for me too. I never seem to be able too finish a game (all the way through ToB). Cause every time i want a different party and character.

This time i seem to have found a great party for me:

A good party=>
Me (Archer)
Minsc
Jaheira
Anomen
Nalia/Imoen
Aerie (now Tashia)
This seems to suit me fine :)

A bad party=>
Me (kensai)
Viconia
Edwin
Korgan
Jan/ Hear Dhalis'
(maybe Saravok)

Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children.

If you have Valen mod:

And your like playing the dark side.....

PC:evil mage or whatever (anti-paladin etc)
Edwin
Korgan
Valen
Viconia

Plus room for and annoyng thief or mage.
Valen was needed to balance things up a little, when couldn't have a team of good-two-shoes now could we.

May the force be with you.

You might also want to try a multi-player game and asign control of all characters to yourself. You can even save the game and then copy it to the single-player savegame directory and play a normal single-player game, with the exception of having your very own characters in your party. I would recommend limiting the number of own characters to 4, though (PC included). This way, you can still take some of the NPC's in the game along for their NPC-specific quests.
