Just hit a brick wall I wasn't expecting. Character is a master in house telvanni, should be able to become magister. Go to my patron Aryon, ask to advance, he tells me I've "missed" my chance to become a magister, that I've foresworn the rank.
No further explanation is given, except if I ask for more chores he tells me he'd be willing to advance me to magister. Dialogue dead-ends with the foresworn it bit mentioned above if I try for it, though.
The only possible reason for this I can think of is that I'm already archmage in the mage's guild. Can you not reach the top ranks of multiple factions? Or possibly just not reach the top house ranks if you've already reached the top rank of a non-house guild?
From a practical perspective this has little impact on my game. I already have the fully developed telvanni stronghold, and there isn't any point to further advancement except for the hell of it. I'm bugged by it anyway, and wondering if anyone can shed any light on it.

Yes, I've wondered about this, currently like most of you I am sure have multiple faction memberships. I know that you may only join one house, but what about becoming guildmaster of all the standard guilds(mage, thief and fighter) is that possible? In fact is it possible to be guildmaster or head of more than one faction?..........as long as none are hated enemies of the other like, cjdevito's problem. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Actually, I just managed to get past it, and it turned out not to have anything to do with the mages guild at all.
Telvanni advancement can go one of two ways... either you dead end at master, or you become magister just to specifically kill the current archmagister and take his position. If you've completed -all- of aryon's quests, he offers you a choice of which you want.
Unfortunately, due to the sloppy way it's put together, if you haven't done every last quest of Aryon's and you ask for advancement, you'll get master without being given the choice.
The solution is pretty simple. If you're stuck at master and want to become magister, call up the console and type:
player->PCLowerRank "Telvanni"
which will drop you back down to wizard rank. Finish any of Aryon's quests you have remaining, then ask for advancement and you should be given the choice to pick magister.
