Spoiler:
When you enter the ruins you walk a bit and you'll find a small entrance on the right and a big space on the left, go to the left and fight your way to the second floor (there's a rocks way on the left). Once on the floor on the left there's a door. Open it and you'll face the boss, dispose of him and you'll find the dwemer puzzle box on a shelf.

ok, i have also been all throughout this place and even ventured further past into some lost...something or other area.
the room that's suppose to have the puzzle box has some steam machine..am i correct?
well i've look all over this room and cannot find it. when you pick up the box will it show the name?
now i have the guide book as well it mentions Boss Crito, i havent paid much attention to the people i've killed but i havent seen a guy buy this name.
is there another cells of hollow hand? like two areas with the same name?
P.S. i am a little disappointed by the guide book.....they didn't design it very well

OK this gets asked alot so here it is....highlight to read spoiler:
As soon as you walk in there is a ramp down and 3 round portal doors. Above the portal doors is another area. Walk back towards the ramp out and between the doors and the ramp up there is another ramp that you probably just mistook for rock formation. (I did the first time ) The room is up there.

Im still not finding that puzzle box. I found the tube though.
Is the box in the hollow hand cells? (when you enter, 1 small room on the left and 1 small room on the right then the room with the steam machine)
If not, where is it. Ive been through most of the ruins.
Ive jumped over the lava and fough the big guy with the warhammer, but found nothing in there (there looks to be a little elevator thing but cant make it move).
Is it past the water room? I cant get up to the top level.

You guys are as way off as possible actually..
It's really easy to find. Head ALLLLL the way back to the very start of the ruins, right up to the top (face the door out to the region if you will). When you walk down the spiralling path to the bottom you will see three parallell doors on the minimap straight ahead. Stop at the bottom. DO NOT ENTER THE DOORS. Look up a little bit, see some torches burning in an area above the doors? See that "rock formation" that happens to be just steep enough that you can walk all the way up? Well..just do that. Don't have to enter ANY of the doors leading from the first chamber. The steam engine and all that is way beyond this point, there's nothing in there except loads of dwarven pottery and cogs and heavy crap. Eventually, just bugger it all and use a levitation spell to fly up there

@Proffate:
Oh him. Yeah he's a total bastard at the very early stage of the game indeed.
What kinda character are you? When I was warrior I had big trouble because I could never get really close to him since he spawned that bloody skeleton between us and nuked me with lightning spells. Then I made a ranger with a bow. That sucked too, my shots did way too little damage and he'd close up on me too far..changed tacs..Go to mages guild, buy a couple of small summoning scrolls (no matter what char you play). They work no matter what. The skeletons he summons will be totally occupied with banging on your summoned ghost to bother with you..plenty time to kick mage's ass.
Or eventually, be a battlemage and rain death from above with Levitation and Fireball combo. They're both early spells and not all that expensive.
BTW: Are there any really cool long distance spells besides fireball?? can't seem to find anything!! Tried to make some spells in spellmaker, but they go way into the 1000's the moment you up the duration a little bit.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try the summoning spell approach. I'm trying to avoid the temptation to keep creating new characters; gonna try and stay with my Breton knight char all the way.
Have to earn some cash first, tho. It's tough early in the game. In Daggerfall, you could get a random quest (escort somebody, kill something) just about anywhere to earn some gold. Haven't found that here.
btw, I found a hints article for your thief somewhere (can't find it today) that lets you tweak the game without cheating. You start by getting your stealth up to 100. Basically, you stand in front of an NPC, weigh down the Tab key so it stays down, then go away for a few hours. When you come back, the skill has maxed out.

Hm guess you've already restarted when you read this, but
you could just give buggerall about the main quest and perform the Fighters guild quests (remember there are different fighters guilds in every town, that all have different quests), or join one of the big houses (hlaalu for thieves, beloran for fighters, telvanni for mages) and level up in that way or just get alot stronger..then go back to the bridge later and continue the puzzle box thing. It's no big deal, and there is NO timelimit on quests in the game as far as I've seen. Why get stuck on one tough when there a dozens others much easier quests
It's not a linear game where you HAVE to finish quests in order.
I actually managed to hop like a mad bunny and dodge past the summoning mage at one point..but got killed by the 2 Cliffracers (the most annoying monster in ANY rpg EVER..I can see why someone made a mod to remove all cliffracers ) hovering over the other side of the bridge..but it is possible if you hop alot (moves faster)..

Thanks again. No, I didn't restart. Well, I did, but kept my saved games so I could go back if I wanted. I figured that the quests would stay easy if I stayed in Balmora to gain a few levels. Or, the first quest at each guild might be easy.
Hell, I'll try anything. Starting out is always the tough part, and I'm not really good at games requiring reflexes, anyway. I stick to RPGs like the Baldur's Gate series and Diablo II. (Still haven't gotten to Mr. D in the latter.)
I'll catch on eventually.
